Think of the differences in the business end of it...with a stud dog, all you really are concerned with is the money. If you get paid and the owner of the female has a litter, well that's about all there is to it. But with selling puppies, now you have the general public in force. You now have to deal with every person that buys a pup, some will become new friends, but some will be those people you wish you never met.
I think though that the biggest thing is when you are a stud dog owner and you only breed other peoples females, you can easily blame the lack of reproducing on them. "awe, you know, none of them pups turned out, must be that female he has is no good...." Sort of like blaming squirrels for a slick treeing dog, we all know better...but it sounds good and it's easier than manning up.

Disagree many of the best stud dogs out there today are still hunted in the hunts and their owners keep very few of their own females they would rather breed other top quality females that are also still hunted rather than have a whole kennel full of females that never see the woods of their own . It is to hard to do it all and most don't make it their full time job many are owned by coonhunters who can't stand dogs just setting in the pen not being utilized and don't have time to raise litter after litter just to sell pups . Think this way when you call a stud dog owner looking for a pup or to breed your own female if he has a kennel full of his own whose is he going to try to sell his own or the guy who spent his hard earned money raising a litter - the ones running a puppy mill are going to try to sell you their own and tell others about his own . The other guy is going to give you his honest opinion and a list of those bred to his dog letting those who thought enough to come and breed a chance to sell theirs .

I never said a stud dog owner wont blow off at the mouth about how great they are when the puppies turn out....they'd have to be stupid not to.

If you got a stud that is bred to by the public a lot there is no reason to keep females to breed too. The only purpose for that would be to get pups out of your dog out there when there isn't enough outside interest. Or they simply are using the pups as a source of income. Either way it is there business what and why they do it. A lot of guys think because someone has a popular stud they are raking in the money. I'm sure it is nice having the extra cash but all of them I know work a regular job on top of trying to coonhunt and spend time with there family. That doesn't leave a lot of time to raise 5 or 6 litters of pups a year and have to put up with the yahoos purchasing them.
