I think in your situation I would be looking for two pups out of some good crosses and I would go with completely separate litters not littermates. Myself I don't like to go with two at a time I like to give one pup all my attention but I have my dogs staggered out in age I actually have a young dog right now that's pretty good and a new pup coming along behind him. Since you don't have anything I would go with two and see what you wind up with. The thing you will find though with two is one is just going to be a little better or just catch your favor for one reason or another and that's the dog that's going to excell because you just give it a little more attention but hey you might get lucky and end up with two nice young dogs then you can decide if you want to sell one or keep them both.
As far as old dogs go I would be patient and just grab one if the right one comes along from somebody you know. I'm sure I'll see some counter replies about old dogs that are still going strong and I have seen a few myself but for the most part I see old dogs like used cars you really are just buying somebody elses problems in the long run because allot see a substantial drop off in the last year or two of they're life so If you go buy a nine year old that makes you happy for a season or two are you prepared to feed him for a few more years until he passes? That's something I'll do in a heart beat for a dog I've had several good years with but one I just picked up at the end of his career is a little different story.
Just like DChart pointed out if those pups are naturals you really don't need an old dog to get started and I see he's already offered to hunt with you some.
That's just my $.02 for what it's worth. LOL
EDIT; Actually I see DChart never said anything on this thread about naturals that was on another thread "my bad" LOL but still that is my feeling if you get a good pup with all the softwear already loaded you can get them started pretty easy. IMO

ya know what gets me about the old broke dog, half of them are junk too, i paid good money for a ol broke dog when i first started and that dog never seen porkys before and i about ruined him trying to break him from them, he wouldnt quit running them and he was a nice coondog before he met ol porky, the OL BROKE DOG solution isnt always the way to go IMO

and what Rlenhart said pups is your way to go right now

That sounds like a deal you'd be a fool to pass up. It's a win/win either way for you (and very generous on Daryl's part I might add). The hardest decision I see is which one to pick those are a couple nice lookin pups! I'd normally lean toward the tri color but really think on those two I'd go with the red one he really looks like he's gonna be a brute.
