but I do realize finding a near perfect dog to hunt him with is sometimes hard to do, but find several local hunters and ask them who has the best dog they have hunted with and if he or she is in your area, get in contact with them and see if they would let you go with them. And try that.
If you cant keep doing what you are doing a young 9 mo old with a lot of go needs no encouragement to do wrong. Rock was raised with tons of deer. Deer often walked by his pen almost nightly. I hunted him over my salt blocks and corn piles and I had deer on camera right before we hit the woods and he never once acted like he wanted to run one. He is off to a good start.

Just keep him coon minded and he should be fine. keep us posted.
Good post by cheyenne as well. Thats HOw i do it as well. I recatch several coon and then they quit getting caught. I move my trap to my feeders and after the corn runs out I catch some then. I use a peanut butter sandwhich. I have a friend who gets old honey buns that have expired from a bred place and he catches me a lot of them as well.

rub some of that peanut butter on the little flap they step on. Mine have gotten wise and will reach in over the flap and grab the sandwich and never get caught. I have some areas that they have been caught in multiple times and I see them on camera not even looking at the trap. coons are smart animals.

Sorry I read your post wrong the first time but yea I don't have another dog to run. But I really like that idea. Never thought of doing that. Going to get a few more feeders out and try to get ahold of some more traps

being patient and to know how to read a pups actions is very important, never force him to do anything, encourage but don't force it. I start almost every pup all by itself. taking them for walks in the daytime is huge. once they know what a coon is i'll drive around at night and try to see one on the road and turn out on it. anything for the most part that's get them out of the kennel is a plus. One of the most important things to remember is if you use a caged coon, DON'T over due it!!! work the pup until he has reached his peak of being excited and pull him away.

I was highly impressed with Garret when I met him. I believe he will put the time in. Both these guys offereing advice garret are spot on. Keep him in the woods and let his natural instincts take over. He is bred to do it and has a great start. You are on the right track.

took rock out for a little while tonight.. he struck a few tracks but didn't stay with them very long.. hunted good. stayed very busy. walking across the field back to the truck he ran up on a skunk and its a miracle he didn't get sprayed. he chased that sucker and I did my best to get him to stop. he wasn't listening so I hit him on a low setting on the e collar and he came back to me immediately. we left there and drove over to where I have my corn pile and trap set.. the trap was triggered but no coon inside..i used a peanut butter sandwich with syrup poured over it as bait and looks like the coon had reached in from behind the trap and was trying to pull it through the cage lol. smart suckers. I moved the sandwich further up in the trap where hopefully he can't get to it from the back..

also, how hard do yall push a dog at this age and at this point in its training.. right now I'm not hunting much longer than 1.5 hours but trying to consistently take him every night..

on my box traps I put a real tight closed wire around the back and part way up the side so a coon could not get its paw through and trip it off.

keep making it fun. He is still just a pup. way too many guys push a pup at this age and then they flame out before they are two. You are in it for the long haul.
if he isnt having fun he will let you know. He is a pretty powerful pup body and athletic wise so he can take a pretty good amount of hunting. If you plan on competition hunting him Id work up to 2 to 2.5 hours at some point. but Just let him hunt. It might be a month and it mite be the next time you take him but he is going to hit a hot coon track and run it and tree it and then put it out on him.
As far as the caged coons go. Id let one lose without him knowing you are doing it. Id turn it lose, put the cage back in the truck and walk him over the track. he knows what to do.

me and rock just went riding the roads last night looking for a coon..spotlighted one in a tree in a field.. pulled over and cut look rock loose.. walked him over towards it.. he was smelling around the tree and got up on it a couple times but thinking the coon had probably been sitting up there for a while.. couldn't ever find the coon but it was a den tree so figured he went inside it.. going to get a few more traps today and set them out.. that will give me four traps total.. no reason I can't catch a coon in four traps within a few days
