learned

If you have one you enjoy hunting 5 nights a week compared to one that wins on the weekend but sucks to hunt all week stick with the one that you enjoy. You will be better off in the long run, and if your lucky enough to have that all in one hide you are blessed !!

I've learned that they are just dogs and there are more important things in life.

1. No one hunts hard enough you will wear out before the dog will if it's in shape and has enough drive.
2. Don't judge a dog by wins and titles hunted with many a pr dog that could clean up at a hunt but will never get taken
3. A good breeding program takes more than one person and the resulting pup's have to get trained and hunted they don't learn anything in a pen
4.my best crosses have came from litters of consistent coon dogs breed to another dog from a litter of consistent coon dogs
5. If you're mad at a dog he is smarter than you he won lol
6. The hardest person to be honest with is yourself
7. A smart dog will figure out how to get the job done
8. You can't train more drive into them
9. Top notch coon dogs and rare you will be lucky to have 1 in a lifetime and when you do it's a curse because you will be comparing every dog after that to him and be dissatisfied
10. If you can't feed em don't breed em

good ones

I would say that the good ones are defiantly few and far between.
what I call good and the next feller calls good could be quite opposite.
always buy in the woods it could save a let down later.
you will wear out a new set of boots making that good one.
and most importantly if you like huntin that one and your the one feeding them than it doesn't make a hill of beans what the next guy thinks....

happy huntin!!!!

I fished in my first tournament a few years ago and was on a friends boat. It was a 50,000 dollar boat and so was the others except one it was a 14 foot bass boat about 3 colors and the steering wheel fell off, i laughed until they doubled up the whole fleet on fish. That being said dont judge a dog on their papers, looks, owners, or hype. Coon dogs come in all shape sizes and colors.

I have learned

There will be more arguments over a trophy and a win slip than a $1000 added purse

Once you get that once in a lifetime dog you will compare every dog you hunt with to him and never be satisfied as long as you do that

Coondog to coondog crosses seem to produce better than papers

People will breed a dog just because it comes in heat

some Coonhunters will come back and hunt your spots without you

People talk about hunting alot more than they actually hunt

Your wife will hate you if you hunt enough to make one great

Some people have no clue what a COONDOG is

smart pups will train themselves if given the chance

pups running trash actually helps them learn to run a track

you can take hunt out of a dog but cant put it in them

Accuracy is a lot more genetic than I once thought

"started" means it will bark

dont buy a dog on the internet. buy it from a pleasure hunter that hunts hard

No matter how nice your dog is he can get beat on any given night

Dont evr tell somebody what your dog absolutely will not do when they want to hunt with him. He will make you a liar.

I learned

If you truly have a good one, push it in the hunts until it's old and stop looking for the next best thing. This way you won't wonder what she/he could've accomplished if ya just had kept hunting him.

Iv learnt

That not all bloodlines work for me
That not all breeders are 100% honest
That the best way to make a decision on a hound is in the woods
That there is alot of hard work and wore out boots to make a top shelf hound
That what works for me may not work for the next man
That just because you buy a pup with a guarantee doesn't me it is good deal
That some IV had dealings with would rather give you another pup unsted of your money back
That there is alot of crosses that get made just to have pup's to sale
That there is some breeders that are living on the name and hounds they had years ago instead of today
That just because you breed coon dog ta coon dog doesn't me you will always get coon dogs however I feel your ODs are better
That is hard to leave my best hound home and hunt a young dog
That iv still got alot to learn

Know!

Critique your own hound like you were hunting with a strangers dog.

Some folks would rather climb a tree and tell a lie than stay on the ground and tell the truth!

A great handler/promoter can do more for a stud dog than the dog can for himself.

Never listen to someone that don't have the facts to back it up.

There are three kinds of hounds, COONDOGS, dogs that will tree a coon and, well, if you don't know what the first two are, you probably won't know the third!

Have a great day....Ron

Very good comments top dogs are bred by top houndsmen. run major hunts breed a dog that has it all . Personally I feel that line bred dogs can produce consistently to a point that most people cannot believe its possible to have 10 or twelve top hounds at one time.

TRACK IS WHERE ITS AT! great track dogs make great tree dogs because they END the track and they have the coon.

Listen to every ones advice and take none of it, Never delude yourself about a dogs faults. Do not modify, breed dogs to win hunts . Breed to suit yourself breed for dogs that that are superb in every category.
Most people know what it takes to win but know very little about canines like did you know that dogs are right brain or left brain dominant? Do you even know what that means? Do you understand psychology? Stimulus, response or the rules of reinforcement or extinction? Did you know how dogs communicate? Do you know one simple test to determine if your hound accepts you as the alpha? If you realize what little you know .......Then you are capable of learning the good stuff.
You cant teach anybody who already knows it all which is just about every one.

Thanks in advance.

I guess I'll start.
I feel like I have learned quite a bit through my experiences. But the biggest thing is this:
If I knew half as much today as I THOUGHT I knew 15 years ago, I would know twice as much as I know now...

Mike, the main thing that I have learned is to keep my big mouth shut!Ha
