I think now days that too many folks get caught up in the glitz and hype of the dogs at the top of the heap. The young folks that haven't been around long seem to be the most volnerable. I too, at one time, believed all I saw and read in the books and then on the internet. Some of the best advice I ever got was by word of mouth from real honest to goodness coon hunters, not top breeders with world champions. As said before on here, very few stud owners will refuse a female. An old time coon hunter that measures his success by the pleasure his hound gives him knows what really matters in a hound. The best advice I ever got was once when a fellow hunter told me to check out this certain hound if I ever wanted to breed my good female again. This hound was not highly touted at that time like most of the other studs being offered up at that time. He said he had seen first hand that this certain male was throwing very nice pups from different females. I took my female to said stud and it was the fifth and last cross I made on my good female and it was by far the best. I'd like to say that I've always tried to breed coon dog to coon dog but even that doesn't always work. Anyone that says they have never gotten several duds from top hounds would not be telling the truth, IMO. If I have learned one thing from breeding and raising these fool hounds is they don't always take back after their parents. Some traits pop up and I don't know where they come from, maybe from Chiggers Shitzu LOL! Anyhow, that's my two cents worth, that and $5 just might buy you a cup of coffee. Thank you everyone for your input!

Just one of those subjects or mindsets that is very often recommended for folks to do, but when the rubber meets the road, is not very often successful. I sure don't have any answers for a viable alternative. Maybe just listening to other peoples experiences & which of those experiences were of a favorable outcome is as good of a method for the mud to stick to the wall as any.

Keep ole blue in that timber everyone!

I believe the best crosses I've seen are strong trait to strong trait producing a higher success rate of decent dogs. The compensation crosses seem to be a mixed bag.. Just what my observations have been.

Very interesting post and question. One aspect of our dogs was brought up in a comment-tree dogs or track dogs. Does anyone else find it of interest that our breed overall has lost a lot of the BIG mouths that Blueticks were once known for? I predicted when the hunts went from 3 hrs. to 2 hrs. that we would lose tracking and gain more tree. The Walkers have gained a lot better mouths during this same period of time while we have lost. I am just sharing a few observations I have seen over the years-didn't say it was good or bad! Just what I have ran into. Good luck to all of you.

Even though i don't consider myself a breeder i have bred several females over the years and the question i get the most is how do i think this will cross with that. I know the simple things most know like mean to mean usually = mean but i have a simple theory that even some of my friends on here don't like but i tell them try the cross and if it works to your likes do it again if it dosen't then no more. I am just not smart enough to tell someone with any certainty what a first cross will produce.
