Ive been shooting a ruger single six with a 9 1/2 inch barrel for over ten years.

I have always shot shorts out of it to keep from getting anything gun shy, and to keep from disturbing anybody i might have gotten close to.

I carry a ruger Mark 3 . It's extremely accurate. If I can get a rest, and it's a clear shot I can usually roll one out in one shot, but free hand is a different story. I always take plenty ammo. Our trees aren't that big here, so if you hunt in big timber, that should be a consideration. A coon sitting on a big limb, in a tall tree, where all you can see is a piece of him, can be a challenging shot. Also a word of caution. After shooting coon out, take care to put pistol away before trying to handle dogs. Being a semi-auto makes it a little dangerous. I know of a guy who accidently shot himself in the foot,by getting tangled up in dog leads while holding pistol. Because of this I always unload, and put pistol back in holster, before I do anything else. I ain't your momma, but be careful.

I carry a Browning Buckmark .22 caliber when coon hunting and a Ruger Single 9 in .22 WMR when cat hunting. I love the ease of carrying a firearm that is small and strapped to my side, leaving my hands free to do whatever needs to be done. While both of these guns are accurate, the Ruger Single 9 is amazingly accurate and packs a punch. I use it when calling fox across Southwest Texas.
Adios,
Gary

I have a .22 Ruger Mark III Competition Stainless I Carried and it was deadly accurate. Most accurate pistol I have ever owned. I dropped it out of my RZR on the black top and it broke my back sight. So now I'm using my cricket with Lazer and it works twice as better as any scope or red dot. Going to order me some lazer grips for my Ruger also. Love my crimsons on my other pistols

hunting arm

still toting the Remington Nylon 66 that I bought in 1978. Open sights and deadly accurate if the shooters eyes are good.

25 yards if I am shooting regular 22lr ammo...if I am trying to be quiet and using shorts I re-sight it in for the same range but with shorts. They will hit low if you don't check it. So will some subsonic or special target loads. Very seldom is a coon in a tree higher than 75 or 100 ft. around here. Also, since you are shooting up at a high angle most of the time the bullet wont drop too much anyway.

Pistol

I have 2 but I use my browning buck mark the most with a browning reflex sight 2 to 3 shots and it's out of tree. Then I have a ruger single 6 with a sight mark mini shot reflex sight mounted. I use it when I'm hunting spot the I need to shoot with shorts. Sight it in at 25yards and practice and you won't look back.

I just bought a Ruger SR22. I'm not sure about how good it will be for knocking a coon out of a tree though. Its pretty small and compact. Its accurate enough to put shots on target just fine, but threading the needle between branches is still yet to be seen. I just have plain open sights on it too.

I have always found that open sights at night don't work too well, at not for me...too much to line up. You have to get a light on the coon, you have to get light on the sights so you can see them and then you have to make a hit. A scope makes things so much easier. With a scope all you have to light up is the coon.

Just started packing a S&W 22 a-1. It has been really accurate so far. I mounted a laser on it and once you put the laser on him it's lights out. I sighted it in at 30 feet. At 30 ft it is an inch and a half high but at 60 feet it's dead on.

I use the ruger mark 3, with a 8" heavy barrel. Open sights usually have the coon out in about 5 shots in big timber.

I have a .22 ,10 " T.C Contender with a red dot scope I have used.
I will say there were a few times I carried it and found the coon buried on a limb with just a bit of it visible and I kicked myself for not bringing my rifle.
I guess I Just did not have faith!! All worked out and it did the job harvesting the coon. Very accurate set up.

Killed a lot of coons over the last 20years with a Browning Buckmark with 5 1/2 inch barrel and open sights. Would like to put a red dot scope on it but will have to have the receiver tapped. Very accurate but my eyes are the problem nowadays.

Buckmark

I didn't have to tap my buckmark to put a rail on it. The rail bolts where the rear sight is uses the same holes.

You must have had it re-barreled...the longest barrel Ruger offers on the Mark III is 6.88"
