This year at English days sitting in the clubI was joking about what it would take to win the Grand Nites that Saturday night. I knew it took 1200 on Friday night and I was not expecting to score that.

I drew out in a 3 dog cast and my guide was Roger from Indiana hunting a dog called Josie. I believe he goes by Hoosier on here.

My Ike dog treed 5 coons and his Josie female treed on 5 coons and the other dog treed 1. We scored on 11 coons and dogs were split up the whole cast. It was the best cast I have ever been on. I won it with 1425+ no minus and no circle. The Josie female I believe ended up with 1175 and her and Ike was only on 1 tree together.

I would venture to say that several of the big scores are no doubt questionable especially if 1 or 2 cast members get scratched or withdraw pretty quick and leave.

I've got a common dog that has scored 1250+ after taking 125- and had 200 circle. It started out as a 3 dog cast one dog went down 3 coons in the first 30 minutes we scored on 2 and he left a tree and pulled out. We scored on 8 coons that night and a den. We got real lucky with 2 of the coons, 1 was in a wood pile the other was in a RV. After the first 2 trees the dogs packed up so it was easy to run up a score.

Our September hunt up in Owen Sound always has big scores. I`ve been on a cast and on a single 15 acre cornfield we looked at 15 singles sitting up and a couple trees that looked like Christmas trees.

JMO I do not think you will have a score like that with a cast of the deep and alone dogs that every one wants .

1200 is very reasonable In ukc on buckets or thick coon. I've drawn out with guides that put buckets 150 yards from the road. Turn loose strike for 100 within the minute, tree for 125, all dogs pile in and you head to the tree before the 5 is up. Therefore you are at the tree probably within 5 minutes, start the time and if it's there probably gonna find it within the first 5 minutes of shine time (at least most of the time). That's 10-15 minutes of time taken and most these ukc hunts you're not cutting off trees, you are drop hunting. So 4 1st and 1st and you are sitting at 900 in an hour if the same scenario holds each time. Pkc you are usually getting more split trees, therefore turning off trees a lot and strikin for a quarter. That's why scores typically aren't as high.

From what ive seen here in thinner coon, the guide/judge can really help too. One night i drew out with a guide who had several different small spots to hunt and we were almost striking off the leash. Treed a quick coon, called time out and moved to a new spot. Kept on doing the same thing over. I think 675+ won that cast but had the dogs packed any id say the score could have got big.

Don't care how they do it by thereself with 2 lookin down I'll take it every night.

When you're in coon, & have one by itself all night, but not leaving the country to be by itself, you can rack a good score. Especially if it is a high end strike dog.

I know you like those loners Nick, the blue male who won that Oilfield 5000 hunt was exactly like that, by himself, dead accurate, but did not leave the zip code to be by himself. I sure liked what I saw from him!

Obviously with two dogs scoring that high they had several spit trees.......so let's put this in perspective; Handle your dog, shine the tree, score the tree, walk to the second tree, shine the tree, score the tree, lead the dogs for 1 min, cut the dogs, strike the dogs, tree the dogs, walk to the first tree.......and repeat in 10 minutes or less consistently for 2 straight hours

I don't know about you guys but that makes me question the integrity of major UKC hunt events. I hunt mostly small, local UKC and PKC events and, in my experience, UKC is definitely the more organized, professional and respected organization. However major PKC events yield more believable top scores.

I have an awesome hound that I would love to see complete against major competition, but honestly I don't think its the dog that matters in those large hunts. What are your thoughts?

I've scored over 1000+ a few times. It can be done in thick coon pretty regularly. Heck, I scored 625+ last March in a one hour weekday PKC hunt with an 8 year old dog. Trees are only worth 100 there too...

1000+

I have witnessed that kind of scoring in Michigan and Indiana and I was on the loosing end of the cast, they were true scores no bullcrap involved, just an extra special night with an extra special hound.

its easily done anywhere where the coons are thick. Common place in the North, but the coons ain't real thick in most southern places. Oh there are a few that can wear out a pencil and calculator when conditions are right. TIDE and weather effects the south as much as anything. Throw in a feeder bucket or two and you could get that kind of score with a good dog. That is the problem down here, all the good dogs are bought up by the money folks and taken north. ha!

I NEVER BELIEVED IT UNTIL....

I drew Seth Isch few yrs back at Walker days. He scored 1500 night before. I told OL lady I sure would like to draw that dog on Saturday night. I felt pretty cocky about my hound and pretty sure that score could not be made.

WELL I GOT MY WISH. Seth,me,some boy from GA( Who got plum mad at the whole thing) and another dog.

Two withdrew, I stayed the whole time and hunted. I had what I and others thought was a very very nice fast accurate dog ( And she was). But, after 2 hours the gyp of Seth had over 1600 plus. I seen every coon with my own eyes. And found most of them. So, yes it can be done. And when it's your turn to witness it you will never forget nor never doubt it again.

Seth, I always share that story with the boys down here who say no way. It was definately a hunt I will never forget.

You know I've heard story's like that about Seth and his dogs before.Heard they can put on a show and don't have to go deep to do it.To tree that many coons in 2 hours takes some serious dog power.Way to go Seth.

Very much possible.

Couple years ago at PA State Hunt with Jude we score 1250 in the first hour. 2nd hour, something changed and it was all we could do not to loose points. Won the hunt with 1125+.

The year we won PA State Hunt with Hannah, we treed 9 coon in the 2 hour cast. Each of the 3 dogs had 3 first trees. Only had like 1000+, but all 3 dogs were within 100 points from highest to lowest. If one dog would have been 1st and 1st on all those, it would have been over 2000+

This was in western PA, not Ohio/Indiana/Michigan coon population by any means, no feeder buckets, just nice farm country, but it shows me that it can easily be done.

When was first tree changed to 185 points? Thats what it would take to score on 5 coon and end up with 1425+ that is if you got first and first. Just saying
