First, I've not seen the boss or sunfire - so I cannot pass judgment on either. Knowing the radical process these LEDs go through to produce the higher LUX values almost certainly produce artifacts. If you do not want artifacts, I would stay with the bright white light, although most of them will have circles but not as noticeable - this is what produces some of the spill for walking.
Second, I did check the battery boxes on the soft cap and bump cap. The bump cap laying on a flat surface barely touches the table. With the soft cap, the box raises the cap up about 1 inch from horizontal.
Third, each click gets progressively brighter. From the third click to the fourth click is not proportional, however the third click is consuming 5 watts of power.
