The only

Problem is whether your talking about a superior coon dog that's Grntch or just a Grntch that really isn't a true Grntch, you know the type. A coondog can tree em anywheres but the problem is there not many superior coon dogs, lol.

This is a good post to learn from if you just don't get caught up in the North VS South thing. I would rather say anytime a dog is moved to a different environment there may be an adjustment period. I don't care how good the dog is. Here is a prime example.
Two months ago I moved a dog from west Ky to NE FL.
First two nights as soon as the dog got in about 6 inches of standing water with is abundant down here and on the shallow side, it treed slick. Just took off the tree quickly as they were small trees and I could tell right away, and sent her on. She then had coon in the next 7 trees straight and is a pretty accurate hound. I also had a problem with her when she met her first armadillo. Thanks to my Garmin ALPHA that is perhaps also behind us. Now I have coonhunted for over 45 years. I had a young dog about 30 years ago catch a skunk in NC one night. Other than that I have never had a dog catch a skunk or run one to my knowledge. My KY dog has run TWO and that is TWO too many. lol She is a good dog and well on her way to getting adjusted to the water and heat down here. But there was and still is an ongoing adjustment period.
Anytime a dog changes environment there can be a problem that has to get ironed out. The better ones usually straighten up real quick, while some never do. Over the years I have see some men pay top dollar for Titled dogs and bring them to FL only to send them packing because they could never adjust. I am sure this is the same everywhere.

Exactly Bruce, That's what I'm saying a good dog should adapt and overcome and tree a coon no matter where it's at. I don't think a Big Mtn dog is superior or a swamp dog is superior to any other hound just because it hunts in the Mtn's or the swamps. It is all about where the dog has been hunted at verses where the dog is being hunted at NOW. You take that into account and change the area and terrain on the dog and more than likely it will struggle in some way. That doesn't necessarily mean the dog is inferior to any other dog it just means it's not the best in that terrain on that given night.. It's comparing apples to oranges....There are very few that will get it done no matter where you drop them and look good doing it......

Generally the ones that get it done anywhere have been hauled to hunts in different parts of the country.

There is also another side of the coin here. Some not only need adjustment to different parts of the country.

Some that get hauled to hunts learn not perform well in hunts as they get burned out in them just like we do at times. It is a constant battle with your hounds to keep them performing to their max.

these west ky dogs see a mixture of it all!!! steep hills, corn feilds, river and creek bottoms, cut overs, and swamps!! you can go a hour in any direction and the coon population can go from thick to very thin!! i try to put mine in all of them but man those hills get me down!! i can hunt those river bottoms till day light. one drop in the hills and im done!!!! lol

i think a good dog adapts to there environment. a dog hunts better in what they are trained and hunted in no matter if its swamp, hills, or flat land. the best dog is the kind that gets plucked out of the swamp and goes to the mountains and can adapt and still tree coon just like they are at home. that is a rare characteristic! dogs are a product of there environment....

In my opinion terrain doesnt make much difference its coon population example: a dog from Georgia will struggle more here in Ohio see in Georgia or anywhere down south usually that dog finds a track and trees that coon now bring him to Ohio he finds a track and comes across 5 or 6 more tracks its harder to sort them out now take the northern dog and take him south he may struggle to go hunt for that one track bit once he finds it he's fine but take a dog that's got brains between hos ears he can do it any place you drop him

A true hound just takes an adjustment period.
Hunted up North a few times and I was surprised what guy's will turn loose in, Plain cornfield, ditch etc... My dogs would look at me like I was stupid, they where used to the side of a mountain, hunting hundreds of acres. Once they figured out that was as good as it gets it was on.lol

I think It takes time for them to adapt to dry conditions. In the summer months here it might not rain for a couple months. If you take a dog that's used to wet swampy conditions and cutt them out here when we don't have rain for month one of two things will happen. One the dog will strike a track and stand on its head for a half hour. Two the dog will blow throw through the country looking for a hot track. Anyone up here knows exactly what I'm talking about. I'm not saying dogs up here are better at all. What I'm saying is there's a good chance if u take a hound that's spent it's life where there's a lot of moisture to provide better tracks it most likely will take so getting used to. On the other side I also agree u take a hound from up here they might have some problems going through the big swamps for a while. But alot of our dogs come from the same blood. I don't believe one or the other is better depends on how well the hound can adapt. A coon dog is a coon dog where ever it's cutt.

Now as far as it's concerned u can have them swamps! But I've seen these mt coon dogs tree coons in em! But I'm with every one else a dog is gona look good in his own back yard! Be it corn or mt or swamps or river bottoms! Now bring that swamp dog here in med July when it ain't rained in 2 weeks an see if he can track a dry coon! Those mt streams dry up an coons don't get real wet an don't put off as much sent! Plus what sent he puts off drys up quick!!

what I used to do on a regular basis

After hurricane Hugo destroyed our woods in 89, lots of people quit hunting because of the woods....some of us continued...When you hunted dogs in those conditions, just pack em up...ride up north and make whoever you draw.look stupid....I have been on cast up there and treed.coons other dogs never knew existed....I will be at autumn oaks...there will be a dog there named willy g.....to be continued

Not worried.
I know what I'm packing, that's why there still here.
They'll be alone,unless there's a hitch hiker.

Not gonna get into a "My better is better than your better"debate.....Come when there's no leaves,so there's no excuses.

Now we are getting some where could be a challenge match like James Merchant.Joe house and a few others use to have in the American cooner and Bloodlines and they made it happen not just talked about it.

I think its good for the sport if you talk the talk you got to walk the walk and shake the winners hand and ask for a rematch in his chosen hunting terrain.

This would be fun and draw more spectators than mosr people would ever imagine.

Sure hope it happens???
