In a perfect world this is what I want my dog to do. When I cut dogs down a creek or ditch that is the direction I want them to go. With the landowner demographics in my area now they need to or you could have a trespass issue if you aren't careful. If the dogs go down the ditch and it splits and my dog goes right and the others go left and my dog strikes a coon I expect that dog to tree that coon hold pressure if there is any and be there when I get there without needing any help from another dog. If the other dogs strike and my hound has no track I expect my hound to hustle over and get part of that coon. I don't want my hound to absolutly refuse to honor another dog but they need to be capable and confidant enough to tree a coon without any help. Turning a pack of hounds loose and having them scatter to the four corners of the earth doesn't sound like much fun to me pleasure hunting or in competition. Just my opinion and it is what I expect my hound to do.

Richard I will still take the loner. For every leader you listed I can list loners that are winners. They want be redbones but they are loners and winners.Sometimes leaders fail to lead but a complete loner is always by them self. Now I don't have a dog like I described.I would take Danno or Shorty up north or anywhere else and always feel like I have a shot at winning my cast.

Smile Boone!

Boone might be listed in the wrong group if you listen to Jarrod tell you how he wins all of those casts! You seem to think that a loner is because of a character fault. Why if your dog goes hunting, strikes a track, runs & trees it, does it matter if other dogs want to follow him through the woods only to me too off of him? I really don't think your list is very true representation of the whole picture!

MoJo
Clean
Maggie
John Henry
Danno
Janice Joplin
Thousand Dollar Bill
Maggie- That just won $40,000.00 dollars at Russ Myer Inv.
and the list goes on & on

I have hunted with Boone several times and he is a leader. I always thought that Mojo wasn't a dead loner. I have always thought that he was a leader. I have only hunted with Mr Clean one night but he was a leader, not a loner that night. What does your list of big UKC hunt winning Redbone loners look like? And I hunt Redbones not walkers.
Scotty, Shorty was always a leader not a loner when I hunted with him. To me, he is a first and first kind of dog.
Don, what is Gr Nt Ch Deuce, a leader or a loner?

The last few months Shorty has gotten to be more of a loner but he doesn't break his neck to get away from me too dogs. Right now the only dog I own is a 6 month old walker pup and with his breeding he has a good shot at being a loner.Again,I will hunt a coon treer, loner, leader or color don't matter to me.

I know, he "leads" them and shows them how to tree a coon.

Deuce

He is a leader. He will back others, but if he has something on his mind, he could Care less what others are doing. I wish I had a dozen more just like him. Dan is also a leader, and Copper is to. POP is a longer. She won't tree with others. They can tree. With her, but she won't tree with them. Now Ginger is whole nother Monster. She is lead, follow, or get out of the way. She is a first and first.

Ginger

If I could make more hunts or if she had the right handler she would be a TOP hound. She always makes it exciting. Me and her are going to make a stab at AR state tonight. I just hope I can keep up.
What is Bear to you? He was a lead, follow, or get out of the way type here. I never hunted him by himself.

Can you breed for loners? I know that Kevin Shirley's Buster II was a dead loner and almost everything out of him was an absolutely independant dog. But even though Banjo III was not a loner, it seems that a lot of his offspring are.

So is this a breedable trait. Historically do loner male and loner female make loner pups ?

Richard;
Absolutely nowhere did I say that you did! I merely implied that by the way you respond it seems like you consider it a fault! As for the leader, or loner: you just continue to play semantics' to interchange them to make your point! The funny part of all of this discussion is that if your kind of dog has time to cover the coon tree'r, he is a leader! If he is alone because all the other dogs failed to follow him, he is a loner! As for the Red dog verse Walker dog, the problem is, is that if you only compare what we hunt to other Red dogs, we will always be in the same position that we have always been! I have about used my limit on this "POT STIRRIN THING" Your still my IDOL KING RICHARD!!! BYE JOHN

Maybe I had better state my definition of a leader versus a loner.

A loner does not hunt with the other dogs in his pack/cast. He/she tries to slip off or away from them. If/when they tree, he/she will absolutely refuse to back them. He/she is "always" through the country by him/herself with a coon.

See Mr Farr's post for a leader. A leader will not always be with the other dogs. He/she will take his track to a tree once he starts it. A follower will leave his track to go to a leader. But a leader hunts with the other dogs in his/her pack or cast and leads them.

Of course, this is not a perfect world. Sometimes dogs will show varying degrees of being a loner or a leader. Sometimes dogs will change as they grow/mature. Sometimes a leader will become a loner as he/she matures because of his/her experiences with the pack. This is usually referred to as being "hunt sour". Sometimes a pack/cast will have 2 or even 3 leaders in it and they won't get along. One or more of the leaders will decide to become a loner. I deal in generalizations and not absolutes so there are always exceptions.

This is the dog I prefer. If they win they do it alone and if the lose they do it alone.I just haven't had this type dog but wish I did.I also aint gonna cull one bcause they aint this type.I have seen good dogs in loners and leaders and will hunt either.I aint gonna hunt a me too er very long.

Probably the ideal dog would be alone some, lead some and even back a dog every now and then.Yep give me one of them.Oh wait I am hunting one now and I like him.All he needs is a handler.

" THAT RIGHT THERE WAS FUNNY!" I DON'T CARE WHO YOU ARE!!! Allen, I do miss my old fox dog though! But I am long in the tooth & short on fang anymore!
P.S. That's not all I'm short on!!! Thought I better say that before someone else like Leonard, Elvis, or Zepp got the chance too! Have a good day. Good to hear from you!!
