with hounds, unless you have bred the family for several generations I wouldnt pay much attention to it..............bout like gamefowl, aint none of m pure. papaw has had the same family of ireland white hackles for 35 years. Mr. Gus Frithoth told him when he bought them if he ever had one come grey, bet the farm on him. had one in all that time come grey and she was a pullet lol. had one bout 10 years ago come dark black with a brass back and you could raise his feathers and he was solid white............won a lil $$$$$ off him then bred m to everything on the yard lol

Redtick by Blueticks

I believe this used to be more common than it is now.

Dave Dean would sometimes get Redticks off his Hammer dogs.

The Smokey River Blue Diamond Jim blood would sometimes throw a Redtick.

People would refer to this type of color result as "buckskins".

Guy Ormiston used to write that if you get one of these buckskin dogs that should be the one you keep.

The bird dog issue is a different topic. I do believe that bird dogs are typically smarter than most hounds. Some used to love the bird dog/hound cross. I wouldn't doubt that some still do it. I can't knock it. I like COONDOGS much more than COONHOUNDS! If it works, it's good.

those "hi tans" used to happen fairly regular when I was a kid..........70s...mostly when someone bred a b &t to a walker or redbone but not always....I for one always thought there was at least a shred of truth to the notion that they were throwbacks to bloodhound blood used in the creation of all these breeds (all 6) but who knows.

I had one as a kid who was hi tan with white toes and a white patch on his chest who was the brother to a b&t dog the old man I hunted with back then sold to a fairly well known b&t breeder (mid 70s) mine was average but the one sold, Dan, to this day ranks in the top 2 COONDOGS I ever witnessed. there was a red sister (named Witch) who was pretty salty too who died on his chain in her old age. Dan and Witch were the first dogs I ever saw stay treed while a coon was shot out to the other one. you could take your pick to shoot for and leave treeing and both would stay put. in those days "pressure tree dogs' were about as rare as unicorns............
