IT'S INHUMANE! -ST. JUDE COON HUNT BENEFIT
*Guardians of Rescue implores St. Jude Children's Hospital to REFUSE funds raised from this barbaric coon hunt and to stop letting the St. Jude name be used to promote it!
UPDATE: 3/14/14, 6:30pm EST: We have communication from event organizers: This event consists of owners with dogs that go into the forest at night. The dogs are let loose to find a raccoon and chase it with the purpose to get the raccoon to climb a tree (‘tree it’), the raccoon is NOT killed at that point. The owners and dogs walk away to find more raccoons to chase, allowing the former raccoon to come down from the tree and ‘go back home’. We have been told that the raccoons never slip and fall or get caught by the dogs before climbing a tree. We don’t believe that.
What we do know: this event trains dogs to chase raccoons, catch them and horrifically kill them, NOT at this event, but that is what these dogs are being trained to do.
When it comes to the raccoons, many are mothers with very young babies, do the mothers find their way back after being frightened and chased for possibly miles? What could happen to the young babies when she is not there? There is too much training to harm and potential for harm.
We do NOT want to hurt St. Jude. We feel St. Jude needs to be accountable for being involved with this. It’s a dirty game and we don’t’ approve it and neither should St. Jude. If no one speaks up, things never change, if we sit silent on this, then we aren’t doing our job.
--below is the initial post, before the update PLEASE READ--
*Let me first start by saying that I have always been a big advocate and supporter of St Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
**Please take a moment to place a call or email to St. Jude’s (Angela Richmond Director, Public Relations (901-578-6658) comm@stjude.org ... and ask them to please reconsider their affiliation with this appalling event.**
They save the lives of countless children every day and are a true humanitarian organization. Or so I thought… I was shocked and appalled to come across the online promotion of the “St. Jude Coon Hunt Benefit”, sponsored by the United Kennel Club, a St. Jude affiliate, and the Decatur County COON HUNTERS CLUB in Parsons, Tennessee, "Decatur County’s WORLD'S LARGEST COON HUNT BENEFIT FOR ST JUDE" APRIL 10-14 2014

This is the 39th Annual one too!!!
Given the fact that raccoon hunting is so insidiously inhumane, it is unimaginable how a humanitarian organization such as St Jude Children’s Hospital would participate and condone something so cruel and despicable. I am truly shocked and appalled that St. Jude’s would be a part of this.
Coon hunting is a “so called” sport where coonhounds hunt and chase raccoons up trees, at which time houndsmen proceed to shoot and wound these cornered animals forcing the raccoons to fall from the trees, allowing the dogs to shred these poor animal to pieces while still alive. I apologize for being so graphic but this needs to be told as it is - sadistic and cruel beyond words.
According to the United Kennel Club, there will be 3 coon hunts during this benefit, but the raccoons will not be killed. I find it hard to believe that they can ensure that none of the raccoons being hunted will not be maimed or killed. Also, this happens to be the time of year when raccoon babies are born. These hunts will chase the mothers away from her babies and they will either starve to death or become prey for coonhounds or other animals to devour. The united kennel club calls them “simulated” hunts. In what context do they mean “simulated”? They are real hunts! These defenseless animals will be hunted and chased by coonhounds, terrified and scared to death.
How can a humanitarian organization like St. Jude’s be part of an event that raises blood-sport money at the expense of the lives of these defenseless animals, Is there no other way to “humanely” fundraise for this extremely worthy and charitable cause? Torturing God’s precious creatures is not the answer!
Please join me in speaking out on this abomination. So many fundraisers are held for St. Jude’s that do not involve the senseless pain and suffering of living creatures.
**Please take a moment to place a call to St. Jude’s (Angela Richmond Director, Public Relations (901-578-6658) and ask them to please reconsider their affiliation with this appalling event.**
In closing, I would like to say that I can’t help but wonder how sad St Francis, the patron saint of animals, must feel as he watches God’s precious animals being chased and hunted for sport, running for their lives to raise money to help save the lives of suffering children. I implore St. Jude’s to discontinue their affiliation with this loathsome and despicable event.
3/14/14: We spoke with St. Jude and they do NOT stop this organization from using their name and they WILL take the funds raised from this event.
