Allen

Us NC boys are not a custom to all this snow & ice on the roads. Maybe all the Redbone men from up north will be the only ones that will make it to Cedar Grove. Someone has to win ! The roads are bad but them railroad tracks are clear. I think I will just take the Train .... All aboard ! !

Slick roads. Slow down.

Hope all of you can be safe with this storm that is coming. Something to think about when driving on Ice and snow. Slow down, then slow down some more. Only use the first 1/4 inch of travel of that gas pedal.
It is the same here every year. First snow or ice we get, people crashing everywhere, then after a couple days everyone drives around real slow, no more wrecks. I've done it myself on those first slick conditions, forget to slow down and crash.
This year we have had ice and snow on the roads for 2 months, cause it hardly ever has gotten above 32 degrees. Everybody just goes on with life now, like it's nothing, use to it, except everyone is driving slow.
Also when putting some weight in the back, a couple hundred pounds is all you need for a half ton truck( makes a huge difference for traction). Just enough weight to get the truck level or slightly lower in the back. Put it in the far back corner of the bed by the tail gate, drivers side. Remember the heavier the load the harder it is to stop. Use sand or something that won't (or can't) come through the back glass and kill you in a wreck. Secure it in place real good.

They even have the National Weather Service helping them out!

From what I just saw on GMA weather(in places 1 inch of snow per hour), I hope everyone stays safe over there and I am really happy I didn't let Rex talk me on into the drive.. Good luck to all those who are going and safe travels!

Well, I'm going to try and head out to southern days in a little while. I have some work to do first trying to get the vehicles dug out. Looks like we have around 15 inches. Haven't heard anything about our interstates.....I'm sure they are moving slow. Be careful everyone.

I was trying to have a little fun with you all. No harm intended.

In all seriousness, be safe traveling and wish everyone a great time. I can remember a good number of years ago when they had that big ice storm come in. Kept us there for longer than we anticipated. The trip with Joe Melton. I'll never forget it.

driving tips

We are used to snow up here, so here are a few tips.

Always put weight in the trunk or bed of vehicle. I use barn dry ,it's ground rock and helps if you get stuck.

Lower your tire pressure ,if you run 32psi in the summer try running about 25psi it helps alot with adding traction.

Keep alot of room around you and other vehicles. 3 second min. distance.

don't be affraid to drive slow . On the two lane roads sometimes it's better to drive on the snow covered left lane instead of the black ice covered right lane.

Keep your eyes on the road don't gawk at all the accidents ,you will find yourself in one.

Don't be foolish ,it's much better to be late.

Gear down try driving in 2nd instead of D and stay off the breaks .

Be safe and good luck to all.

Sawblade---

good points, but having become the Safety Director for the company I now work for and training drivers, I would up your 3 seconds to 8 to 12 on slick roads because the Smith System has us 4 to 5 seconds on dry roads. And the lowering air pressure does give you "some" added traction, but it also gives you tire roll (soft sidewalls) and with adding weight in the back will make it even worst. If you have watch any NASCAR races and most crashes you will hear them say,"they had a tire going down". So be careful, because you drop the air pressure, you have just made a "tire going down".

I agree

Slow is the secret to the method. I have always done this in the winter and never felt much Tire roll . get them below 20psi and you will think your driving a boat.
