Billy I hunted a leopard for 10, years. Here are a few people I would contact. Rex Laker and Ron Ganus are both from Indiana. Dan Sampson, Illionois. Good luck on your breeding. I was also hunting a Clover male dog, liked the clover breeding.

I tried the leopards and did not find what I was looking for. IMO they don't have the brains to be a cur and they don't have the tools to be a hound. I went through 8 some were high dollar big name dogs and hunted with several more.IMO I could not have taken all 8 and made what I was looking for. They looked ok in thick coons but a house cat can tree coons if their thick. By you being a hound man I would go with the mtn cur walker cross.

Hound cur cross

Billy, I was a walker man fom 76 untilt this past spring when I gave my last walker to a fellow breeder, Wesley Willard, of the Coma line we had bred for 20 plus years. When I was at the height of my coon hunting, I was fortunate to have access to 4 or 5 private clubs located behind the levee in the miss. Delta. We used horses and went at them hard. Ten or more years ago I got into curs for squirrels. Looking back now I wished I'd done what you are planning, walker/cur cross. We killed lots of coon but our dogs would go too straight and far. Two years ago, looking for another cur, I met mr. Don Rogers. He lives 15 or so miles east of Oxford,ms. He had a 9 month old pup wild as a buck. For $150, I couldnt go wrong. I've paid many times more than that for pups. She was bred by a man from new Albany, ms. Her daddy was a reg. mtn. Cur, her mom was a half bird dog half b&t. It took a month of constant petting to make friends. That fall I hunted her by herself. After 10 or so hunts she tree a squirrel. I killed a few that year. Last year I killed 50 or so. I hunt her by herself. She's been with a friends cur once. We killed the 8 she treed. She hunts in a dead run, goes 5 to 6 hundreds and ALWAYS comes back by me. If squirrels are out she takes them as she gets to them. If not she ranges out to the 600 yards. According to my garmin, she'll go 20 or so miles in a 4 hour hunt. She trees coons too. At some point this winter I'm coon hunting her. Right now, I deer hunt everyday. If I'd had this cross 20 years ago, I firmly believe we'd have doubled our kill on coons. I bred her this spring to a local reg mtn cur. My pup has the go in her. I'll break her out in January.
Make your cross, you'll be happy you did.
Coleman Allen
Lyon,ms.

My Walker bitch is heavy Yadkin Tar Rattler bred, she's a fine hound IMO but I haven't found anything that hunts alot like her. She will tree alot of layup coons, but she also does a good job on tracking and locating coons too. She's not perfect by any means, but I like her and I'm feeding her.

I should've finished her out to at least a Nite Champion, but she's not really a competition style hound. She cannot stand to be around a rough dog, and she will meet you when you get to the tree (bout 20 feet or so, then go back to treeing). She's 7 years old now, and I'm afraid I'll fool around and not get nothing off of her.

My two main concerns are:

Finding a cur male with a good mouth.

Not breeding to anything that is even remotely ill. (why people keep dogs like that I have no idea, it's a good way to lose hunting buddies).

Coleman, whatever became of the little female you got from me? Can't recall her name.

Brian, when you make that cross let me know. I'll take a pup. As you know, I co-owned Sammy and sold her to Lee & partners to make that cross on Jag.

I'm with my buddy coleman.

we are thinnin down our hounds and going more toward curs. I still have a couple of walkers and going to get down to one.
To this day and I am soon to be 58 the best meat dog I ever owned was when I was a young 19 year old and had a half german shepherd and half black and tan. She started treeing around 7 months old and just never missed. I cant remember ever going to an empty tree on coons at night. She could tree more squirrels during the day than you could kill legally.
as soon as it got dark she switched over to coons.
I have a very smart tight made little cur dog that belongs to my wife that someone dropped off at the house half starved and half scared to death.
that was about 8 or 9 months ago. Might breed him to one of my female hounds next year. Intelligence is my number one trait I breed for when making a cross. So when you have a smart hound and cross it on a smart cur I think you get the best of both worlds.
In just this short period of time, she has taught him to do just about anything you tell him. You can tell him to go get in his crate in the house and he will go lay down with the door open, will load on a fourwheeler on demand and is a number one mole dog. haha
He brings up pretty much one a day. super disposition so no worry about being ill. High high IQ. was never trained out, but I can sick him on anything moving and it is on.
Also like coleman, I have buck fever right now and have got the hounds/cur ideas on hold. As soon as deer season is over I will be back on it. If I make a cross like this Ill let you guys know.

I am just wondering why a full blooded cur won't fit the bill for you? Just look at the lines and I am sure you will find one to suit you. With all these walker/cur crosses lately we are gonna have to give them a name and register them as something other than a treeing cur (which actually ain't a bad idea although I was half joking).

To start with I hunted mtn curs for 12 years before I got my first hound cur cross.Mabey I have bad luck or am hard to please but out of 12 years of huntin mtn curs I owned 1 dog that I would say was above average. I hunted in a bunch of compition hunts and drew out with a bunch of mtn curs that I read about in full cry that was pumped up to be world beaters.I would not have had them if you give them to me.I have had much better luck finding what I like in the cur hound crosses. Hunt what you like and I will do the same.

Jason you recon the strain of mountain cur may have something to do with your problem?

"James i will start by saying none of this was ment to down grade anyone or their dogs. I am just speaking from what i see thru my eyes. I will not call any dogs names because i am sure they pleased the man that fed them and must have pleased alot of other people for them to have been put in the hof.I culled 9 full kemmers in a 13yr span. At the time i culled these dogs i was coon huntin 6 nights a week and squirrle huntin 2 days a week.I worked 2 pups at a time.2 of the 9 were making pretty good treedogs but they were so mean at the tree another dog could not tree with them. "

Yes Tim that had a lot to do with it. I also have owned and hunted with several omcba dogs that I did not like. I am sure their are some out their that I would like but I am having better luck with hound cur crosses and that is what I am going to hunt and don't care if you or know one else likes it. Nice cut and paste job.

I don't care what you hunt. I have a nice walker combo dog that will be bred to Tank this spring.

I hunted treeing curs years ago, and very well may again.

No problem. Like you I am going to hunt what makes me happy. I am not a traditional hound hunter anymore. This hound I have now hunts as well as a hound can and make me happy. She is a little hard headed but I didn't raise her but just about everything else suits me.

I hope the cur puts a little better handle on them but other than that doesn't change much. Tank is as loud as her and will stick a tree as well and go as deep as her in the day. She winds as much as any hound I have ever seen and cuts through the woods like a bird dog. You hardly ever see her with her head down.

I am curious how the cross goes. If it don't it won't have cost me anything but time and being retired I have plenty of that.
