Momentum and early indicators are pointing
to another very strong year for fur prices

Trappers have been waiting for a season like this one for years. In years past, every trapper went out, caught fur and hoped to reach the break-even point with their expenses. Last season’s record sales generated unprecedented price levels — at least in recent years — and now we all live and trap with unprecedented expectations. No one will sell rats for less than $10 apiece. Everyone expects foxes to fetch $50. Otters go for $100, marten for $150, bobcats for $600 and so on. For sure, we are at the peak of the wave, and it might be human nature to expect the exceptional prices of last year to be normal this year.

Although we will know for sure only after the selling season starts in January and February 2014, we can certainly predict a few things with some degree of certainty. While I must remind you that no one has yet found a 100 percent accurate crystal ball, let me offer a few insights that might help you refine your expectations.

First, last year’s fur is all gone to markets worldwide. This means that the auction rooms are not sitting on large stocks of unsold skins that could compete with fresh goods after buying season starts. Nothing left in inventories is good for the fresh stuff, but it also means that if it all sold, there were likely folks out there who did not get all they needed for their manufacturers. The manufacturers and retailers make a profit when they have things to sell, and to sell coats, garments, vests and accessories, they must first obtain the primary product — our skins. The buyers that failed to fill their orders last year might come in more aggressive for the opening sales of this year, and this should help the markets to open strong. That is one star well aligned with the high expectations of trappers.

Second, fashion is eating up fur. I am told by reliable sources that wherever you go in the fashion world, fur is hot and trendy, and designers are taking advantage of the diversity of species, skin types, colors and textures. They are turning our product into a wide array of fashionable and marketable items.

If the old-style, full-length coats have lost some speed in retail, modern garments such as lighter vests, scarves and accessories have multiplied in the fur stores around the world. Gone is the time where a fur purchase was a coat or a coat or a coat. Today, fur can be shoes, boots, pants, vests, hats and, yes, coats. Diversity is what we catch, what fashion promotes, what people want and what we sell. No one wants to look like everyone else, and our wild fur has this advantage over many other textiles — even over other types of fur.

Third is promotional efforts. Some say this year has the most crowded calendar of fur fairs they have ever seen, with fairs competing now for the best dates and places. From Beijing to Istanbul, Paris, Hong Kong, Milan, Athens, Chicago and Montreal, efforts to display and showcase the new products and designs are underway throughout the world. They will be going on until next spring with great intensity. This is what the trade does to keep the markets fresh, alive and well. And all these efforts contribute to the next item —momentum.

Momentum is an oft-ignored variable that has a strong influence on prices as well. When the market goes real high or real low, it takes a few years to move prices away from such extremes. Luckily, the momentum generated by the extreme prices we have now should have a carryover effect to this year’s levels. Even if the fur craze was to cool off — and we have no indication of that — prices on muskrats, for example, would not drop from $10 to $3. They’d only fall from $10 to $8 or something along those lines. If the increase can happen fast under the right conditions, a downward market should happen at a much slower pace. Maybe this is not necessarily a positive impact, but at least one could optimistically view this as an insurance against a price crash.

Fifth is the trends in the industry. Auctions houses are all geared up for more volume, and every big player in the industry is doing something new this year. Fur Harvesters Auction will combine its wild fur collection with American Legend and sell jointly with Saga Furs in Helsinki this year, hoping to reach a wider base of buyers around the world. North American Fur Auctions has increased the size of its auction room to accommodate more buyers. They also have announced three sales, instead of the usual two, to accommodate the extra volume of wild and ranch fur that is forecasted to be produced.

These five elements suggest what? That the markets should open strong, nearing the levels of the May 2013 sale. What could push the market further upwards is some unusually cold weather in China and Russia, which would be fantastic for us trappers. What could slow down such prices? Warm weather in China and Russia. Right now, the only thing we can do is cross our fingers and hope for a good harvest on our traplines and some nasty cold weather for China.

Sold 16 coon in carcass to Groenewold average $6. Only got $15 for 1. Had my wife take them to a drop off point because I was working. Guess I should have given her a min I would take. Haven't got this low of average in quit a few years. The buyer told her he would have given $5/hide more if they would have been skinned cause he didn't want to have the extra in the truck. Figured it would have been like the local buyers, they only give $1 extra skinned. Wrong. Looks like I should have went to one of the local fur buyers. Tops are going for $16 and down from there.

We've sold to Grunewald for awhile now and they have treated us pretty good. have seen people right in front of me in the line at the truck with just as big of coon ,but all full burs and not taken care of very well, get half the average that we do for our nice clean pelts. Just saying we've been treated pretty decent by them.

price

Sold some last night, tops was $32.....avgd $18.85. I had 4 excellent hides and the rest were just fur......small coon still brought $10.
Groenwald buyer says their numbers are way under a year ago as far as hides bought so far. This weather should keep an excellent price come the rut.

Chinese government investigations
could lead to downturn in market

By Serge_Lariviére

The recent soaring of fur prices and the large volume of importation going into China has led the Chinese government to launch several investigations into compliance to import laws and, most importantly, import fees and duties. In past year, Chinese officials found that some of the buyers of raw skins overseas were bypassing the official taxes and duties on imported goods, hence the loss of big money for the Chinese government. Such investigations even led to the arrest of one major fur broker in China, and now, all the major players in China are getting more nervous about buying fur and importing it back to China.

Some say the problem is an old issue, one that Chinese buyers have known about for a long time. But it is only with the recent climb in prices that government officials have decided it was worth the time and effort to assess what valuables were entering the country and claim the appropriate import tariff accordingly. Regardless of the reason, the investigation by the government and the associated claims, seizures of product and legal action all contribute to a cooling effect on buyers. Some fear that buyers might adjust by dropping the prices they are willing to pay to account for the new import tariffs. Others might choose to lower their spending to try to fly below the radar of government officials.

One thing is for sure — none of this is positive for trappers in the field. However, there is still much uncertainty about the actual effects. Some industry leaders believe that after the Chinese new year goes by — it falls on Feb. 5 this year — most Chinese buyers should be back in a good cash situation and ready for our wild fur. But the cloud of uncertainty still hangs overhead, and only time will tell what impact it will have.

Trapper & Predator Caller fur market expert Serge Lariviére

Market expected to drop 15 to 20 percent,
but trim items and prime fur could see smaller dip

_

This is probably the most nerve-racking report I have written since I was asked to replace the late Parker Dozhier for the “Fur Market Report” in March 2012. Honestly, writing this report has been fairly fun since I started. The market has been climbing steadily. I just had to report good news after good news. When I was wrong, it was simply that I had not been optimistic enough, and prices were better than I had forecasted. Nobody called me to complain!

Then, within one year, the market reached a level that had not been seen in years, and for many younger trappers, prices paid for wild fur in February and March 2013 were the highest they had ever seen. For old timers, such prices were a breath of fresh air, and it reminded us that we could make some money on our traplines. When trappers call to report averages on raccoon at more than $50, muskrats at more than $12 and foxes and coyotes at $60 or more, life is great. Those prices were truly lifetime highs for anyone who had not trapped or sold wild fur before 1990.

Then, prices cooled off ever so slightly in May 2013 but still remained so high that every trapper in the country just focused on getting geared up for a higher production line for Fall 2014. Canada and the United States experienced the same flurry of activity. Trap and supply sales went through the roof, lines were expanded, new trappers appeared at roadsides and old-timers dug out their stored traps to get back in the game. This new activity peaked when trapping seasons opened and trappers geared up for their most profitable year ever.

And those trappers were active. Reports have been unanimous from East to West and North to South: The word got out. Trappers were more numerous, and established trappers almost unanimously experienced a reduced catch. It has been said before: When prices climb, more trappers compete for the same number of animals, so the more numerous the trappers, the fewer animals are caught by each individual. The pie does not get bigger. There are simply more trappers reaching for their pieces, so everyone gets a smaller piece overall. And this is what happened.

Although most trappers reported a reduced catch, overall harvest of wild fur climbed. Many established longliners experienced competition like never before, and many saw traps in places where they had never seen them before. Trappers are active when they hear that fur is profitable.

But if the action of the trapline was intense, conditions overseas that affect fur prices were not what we could have best hoped for. China and Russia experienced mild winters, and an issue with Chinese import tariffs slowed the enthusiasm of Chinese fur buyers. Both of these factors immediately impacted the major fur fairs. These imperfect conditions all announced the end of glory days and a probable readjustment of fur prices.

Prices will be going down, everyone says, but how much is unknown. And although we are approaching the major wild fur auction sales, nothing is definite yet. Hence the nerve-racking part of this report.

We still swim in uncertainty. Some trappers wrote to me saying I feared calling a spade a spade, that the market was going to crash and that I should say so. The problem is I still receive mixed messages weekly; some bad news but also some positive.

Even as I write this in early February, just two weeks ahead of the North American Fur Auctions February sale scheduled for Feb. 17 to 23 in Toronto, Canada, no one knows for sure what will happen. Every industry expert I have talked to has provided the same mixture of positive and negative messages from the trade.

5 dollars a piece in sw. Va.and that's for a prime coon. It's not worth killing them for that.

The North American Fur Auctions sale held last month saw reduced prices for most furbearer species.

Herman Jansen, NAFA’s managing director, has more in his report from the auction:

WARM WINTER IN RUSSIA AND CHINA
AFFECTS FUR MARKET

It is no secret across the industry that a warm winter in Russia, China and Europe has exacted a significant toll on the fur market. It started with commercial brown mink, which dropped 50% to 60% from last year’s record prices, and was equally evident in the sale of some of our major wild fur species during our February sale.

With a registered audience of over 400 buyers in attendance, we opened the February sale with coyotes, which sold 100% under very strong competition from Italy, Canada, Russia and China. As a result, we were quite hopeful that most of our trimming articles could be sold at similar high clearance levels. On the opening day, red fox, grey fox and wild mink also all sold 100%, but at reduced price levels. However, muskrats actually exceeded last year’s record prices and sold 100%, with Korea taking a dominant position. Muskrats have become a fashion article in Korea. Muskrat bellies are being used as winter coat linings. Fishers also did very well with many new markets participating.

The sable/marten sale was, perhaps, the most disappointing article within the February auction. Clearances of 30% reflected mostly Koreans buying better goods. To many of our buyers, our price levels were out of line with the Russian sables which had sold earlier in the month. However, a good fair in Hong Kong and Milan should help bring buoyancy back to the market for this beautiful article, despite the fact that the production of sable appears to be on the low side of its normal 7 year cycle. Therefore, we do expect that in our next sale, now being held in May, that we will be selling 100% of what will be now, a much larger sable/marten offering.

Heavy section raccoon, which are mostly used for trimming, sold over 90% with China and Russia dominating, but also received good support from European and North American fashion houses. The semi-heavy and flatter section raccoon, which are used mostly for garments, met price resistance due to the low commercial mink prices. Beaver was again a problematic article as the new low mink prices make the beaver less attractive to most of our buyers. Unfortunately, dressing, plucking and dyeing a beaver is somewhere around $35 in Hong Kong/China, compared to a plucked, sheared and dyed mink at $5 to $7. While beaver is a beautiful article, especially sheared, and has found new support from Italian fashion houses, there is not enough volume depth in the market and it would appear that this problem will stay with us for a while.

Otters sold 100% with China dominating. Lynx and lynx cats sold 100% with Greece dominating and support from other markets. The top end of the lynx cats did very well and all of the Greek purchases are actually for the Russian market.

The most important take-away from our February auction is the clear fact that fur is still very much in fashion. Yes, of course, we didn’t see a repeat of last year’s prices in many articles, but the warm winter in our key fur consuming markets will inevitably have that effect. Nevertheless, NAFA’s promotional work internationally brings new clients to our auction room. Korea, for example, is now into muskrats, fishers and sables. Without our promotion, they would not have been there, so again every penny that is spent is an investment today and in the future.

And here are the species-by-species results
