Let me tell my side of the story. It is very good hunting, due to the fact it is only open for coon hunting 15 days a year. (south unit) and north unit is open from Nov 16 thru Jan. 31. It will be the most crowded hunting you will ever do. If your dog has me tooing ears- you will be walking to a lot of other peoples trees. It is nothing to have someones elses dog come to your tree 4 and 5 times a night. Which doesn't bother me as long as my dog doesn't go to their trees. St Charles is the town closest to the south unit and sits in north side. You will be able to find it on the map. Coon population is great, duck hunting is good also. Most people use it to Bow Hunt, monster dealta Bucks. You will see a wall hanger if you look, while coon hunting. It is always fun and it will rain coons for 15 days.

Mike you are exactly right. You can tree a pile of coon there but more than anything you can find out what kind of dog your leading by the # of coon you tree vs the long walks just to gather up your dogs when they go to other hunters. Ive been lucky enough to not have that problem but Ive seen those that do and if you don't like being crowded don't go. I cant begin to describe the me 2 dogs that are dumped out every 30 yrds down every road. Its a very unique hunting situation over there. I hear the hunting isn't very good this year most Groups are just treeing 4 to 6 a night. They have been logging in there all year and from what I hear from the guys over there is the acorn crop isn't there like normal years. I haven't been so im just passing along what ive heard..

Preston the north unit has a bunch of trees with blue paint on them. If you put in at Clarendon and go down the main trail there is a huge bridge being built- and we both know why. I know you have to do it to make the forest better, but it just hurts me to see it. I have been over there three times this year and have not had a hot race yet. I have not made a tree with multiples either.

Its sad

Man I hate to hear that its happening, I was offered 1000 acres of it back in the summer but got lucky enough to stay busy here close to home. Its a shame that the refuge is getting cut over and I know its going to take its toll on the wildlife over there. By summers end next year (2014) It will be a lot different over there. I personally think they should NEVER cut that timber and allow it to stay natural but hardwood timber is a valuable product for our failing economy and government. I heard Jacks bay was a bunch of "stumps" where I used to tree coons... Very disturbing to put it lightly

I bet you are correct. I heard they are going to select cut from HWY 79 to Hwy 1. Clarendon to St. Charles. I know the trees are worth gold in this economy and the government needs the money but heck I wish they would sell cache river refuge and use that money instead of logging the white river refuge. But as you know I am just a little man in this big world, and my opinion is not worth much..

I have not seen many acorn cuttings at the trees I have made, and in the past they were at every tree. One good thing this year the water is down you can hunt about anywhere on the refuge and be ok.

Conditions were not as good, there were a lot more hunters on Sun and Mon nights and it was pretty foggy a couple of nights but we still managed to tree a few coons and we had a great time visiting with everyone. You had to have a pocketfull of high powered shells and a good scope to knock a coon out of those tall WRR trees, CB's and sub-sonics would not do the job. A lot of the coons were laid up in tiny balls in the forks of some of the tall oak trees and were real hard to find. Notice how clean and flat the woods are around the trees. It sure does make for some easy walking.

WRR

It was a great hunt and a great place to hunt. Jr and I had a ball. I hate the weather cut it short for us. But we did get to see some old friends and meet some new ones too. I am looking forward to next year already. If the good Lord is willing, we will be there. Everyone that enjoys the outdoors needs to make at least one trip to the WRR before it is gone for good. I hope the person or persons that signed a bill to allow the cutting of that natural forest has nightmares every night for the rest of there lives.

Well we didnt tree the number of coons we woulda like to, but thats not what it s all about to me. The fellowship with old freinds and the makeing of new ones are the best part for me, aside from the good eating. I meet people Id only heard of and seen others Id meet at the bigger hunts. Richard and I went visiting Tuesday, Richard counted 11 redbone men standing around just shooting the bull and haveing a great time.THAT S WHAT ITS ALL ABOUT.

Your right man, its not about the amount of coons. I would have liked to have been able to be over there some but things just haven't worked out that way for me this year. I lost by best friend this year and shortly after my mother was diagnosed with Cancer. That's why I have been out of the stuff this year. I hope things get back to normal soon. Im glad yall had a good time over there..

Preston, you should have brought/sent him, we could have used him. Jarrod didn't know what to do without you. He only hunted 2 nights.
