I always wanted to do that because there is some tradition to it and it sounds fun. I've also heard the old timers say it will fire a pup up. I wouldn't tackle a den tree though, too much work. I would just wait til we treed one in a 6 inch cherry. lol I've got 80 acres of trees I can cut down any time I feel like it. Someone bring a pup over this fall and we'll give it a try.

I was lowering a terrier down a big den with leashes and a collar around his waiste ... one of the panic snaps hit the side and dropped him in there .... took me about two hours to chop into the side with a little hatchet and reach in to snap him back up and hope the coon was too wore out to strip the meat off my fingers ....

It was a sure enough big , nice den and I felt bad ... but it wasn't two years later and some hunters bought that place and dozed that stand of trees down to sow hay grazer .

there was a time when i chopped little trees down so that my dogs could run and tree a coon again. be caeful to avoid a tree falling ontop of your dog. it doesn't take much to kill or injure one. i don't care to mess with it now. i'm like hopm now..

I'd never cut a den tree lol , it's like a hotel for the on coming years . But not if it's a small tree why not . But I'd save the tree and kick them out climbing
