Yeah , and that's why it's kinda funny that even if you drive to hunt with a stud and breed to him ... it's a roll of the dice on one hunt .. and even then most have driven and are still gonna breed no matter what.

But , what i mean was that about the time a B&T hits their stride and might win something they are retired to stud ... and the cycle is repeated over and over.

Just name the top contenders in the breed right now and then look at how many of them are breeding females and their owners are hunting pups out of them , and hunting gyps to breed to them and so forth ..

.. you can't beat the Walkers in the deep water with a dog that has spent the last few weeks breeding gyps , training pups or sitting in the pen ...

and that's not about to change for the breed , so it don't matter if we love em' .. or if we have the dog power ... or if we want everyone to hit the hunts ... the big picture is that the off breeds are more concerned with being breeders and raising puppies than winning hunts ...

I've had a string of good dogs ... and have NEVER fed more than the xtra odd pup or so ... I hunt that good dog year round' and for year after year ... night and day .. I turn my gyp out in the rain .. after daylight in July .. you name it and she's been in it ... she aint been fat or layed up except for heats and whelping pups .. and I've hunted her when she had pups at the house on the tit like the old timers did ... and I'm just a pleasure hunter with nothing to sell ... but we still know a few things about dogs and that we laugh at folks that brag on a pot gutted stud dog that has been training pups all week ...

I wouldn't ... outcrossing is not for a working man with one gyp ..the odds of finding a nick are not good enough to justify using the best female I will ever own to experiment ... although experimentation is how progress is made .

I can find nicks of Smithurst dogs that produce and breed back in and get my style of dogs with the extra umph I wanted .. the Echo cross is a prime example of a nick that is used to breed back into a line ... I couldn't be happier... I've dreamed about Gosset syle hounds and Duncan bred dogs since I was a kid and here is a male from a good cross that is also a nephew to my gyp and they are both powerhouses ...

Rebel would be a prospect .. he has some Smithurst in him , along with any of the studs out of Hawkeye Abby or Rose ... I also have semen on a son of Sconce's Hobo ... from the huge nick between Hobo and Echo's Sugar Cookie.

The next time I breed , it will be down to what stud of that flavor is producing honest dogs with stud horse looks ...

I think your right. I know I done that exact thing , had him clicking an winning, finished as a 2 yr old, then wanted something off him. Biggest mistake I ever made. Now I can't hunt him with a strange female or he wants to ride them. Not his fault it was mine. But you live an learn from your mistakes I guess.
Want never breed another male til I'm done competition hunting them period.
