I don't get that logic either... but what do I know? I do know that in general, I drew tougher dogs locally than I did at the bigger hunts. I've not been to many of the bigger hunts that I didn't win a cast, and normally placed. Lots of guys go to the bigger hunts just to go, and enter whatever junk dog they happen to have at the time, just to say they hunted. Don't get me wrong, I've drawn some tough one's at the bigger hunts, but on average. I've drawn dogs that didn't have any businesses being entered in a hunt, IMO. GrNt casts are a different story. Don't see them locally.

Top placings in bigger hunts are just one tool we can use to evaluate our dogs.If it not such a big difference, then why all the TOOTING when a Blk dog places high in a Big hunt?..jmo

Can you name 1 that is hauled to most of the big hunts that never places? I'm not saying it is not a good thing to place in a big hunt. It gets your picture on the web site, the magazines, and the breed album. All in all it is a positive for the breed. Some just get carried away with the meaning of it.

This is my opinion on it so take it for what it is... If I'm interested in Smokey 7 then instead of lookin through all his accomplishment and wins I think that maybe I need to pick up the phone and set up a hunt with him and then make my own opinion about whether or not he is going to help me with what I like to hunt. The hunts are not a bad thing but if I go to a local club and I win my cast in registered and they only have 4 dogs that doesn't mean I don't have a coondog that just means attendance is down.

I think people look at these hunts and measure off of them when they should measure the dog and not the wins. I've seen post on here where people say money is tight and others agree but then you see these same people talking about the ones that do go to the big hunts are the only ones who have a dog to compete with. It does make you feel better when a black dog wins a big hunt but you also have to realize that the dogs that win these big hunts are put in spots with coons. It's not what you hunt it's who you know with the best spots.

I could name some people that regularily show up at the big hunts and have not had the good fortune to place consistently, but is not my intention to insult or downgrade anyone that supports our sport. I do also agree placing at a BIG hunt does not mean that dog is better than another, I am saying using simple math, the more cast winners at a hunt, the lower your odds of placing in the top. when you have a dog like Hawk or Buddy that DO consistently place in the top when the odds are tougher,it can be used as a gauge to evaluate the TOP comp.dogs.Key word consistently.

Can we all agree that consistency is the key? Big or small hunts. A cw is a cw. When I see dogs that win consistently, that's what catches my eye. Winning several casts in a row is more impressive to me than winning a big hunt with a one night big score of 1500+ or so.

Myself,I agree with you 100% Blackdawg,,and to take it a little further. One that is CONSISTENT at the big hunts, where the odds are tougher is also impressive.

I just wanted to be able to look at how a dog made it to a gr nite from first win to last how many dogs they competed against it would seem easier to me to do it with a 4 dog cast every time if there were 10 other casts and the dog still won the first. I like that resume' better if I were looking at a YOUNG stud or a brood female bred to a stud I was looking at I'd like to see this info if ukc was keeping it Boy this thread went a different direction then I was headed for but it's good conversation

Well tell me your honest opinion on this I nitech a female I think the first second place win there was 6 reg. 9 total, the next second place win we had 28 dogs I scored 800 plus no minus or circle and the first place I put on her we had 14 to 18 dogs I won my cast with 400 plus no minus or circle. I can't remember what my score was from the first hunt was it was last year but is this female worth breeding to or no because she hadn't placed in a big hunt? The 800 plus was at our walker sectional and I got beat by twelve and a half

This female isn't a world beater but she sure tickles me when I cut her loose.

sounds like a nice start Is my dog any better 29 dogs 4 casts 3 four dogs and and a three I drew a four had 375 won the first place next weekend 26 dogs 3 four dog casts won first with 550 went to Pete' Th Andrea walker hunt high 70, s entered at hunt 41 or so dogs in the registered class come in with 500 took second enough dogs for a first that's 2 good starts on dogs your dog probly put a spankin on mine but your honest opinion which looks better not sayin because they hadn't been to the big hunts there not no good I'm just looking for a dog in that way and of course go to the woods and see for myself
