I'll have to agree, it does make it easier to go when you're hunting a good hound or you're excited to see what a young dog will do. I work off on a riverboat and while I'm gone ole blue can't stand it. He climbs the electric fence and all and will slip off behind my neighbors and go hunting by himself! My wife can always tell when he's done this because he want be on the porch in morning when she goes to feed him. Then when he comes back he's usually wet and covered in briars!
I kind of understand that in the winter but he does all year long!

I've tried something a little different this year. Instead of fighting sleep due to late nights because of the sun setting so late I've been power walking five miles a day with my competition dog after work. If it is really hot out I'll wait until 7 to go. I have been making one drop a nite when it gets dark late during the week. The walk in the heat seems to be doing well on keeping him and I conditioned. The one drop seems to keep him woods conditioned. On weekends I try to get multiple drops in. The power walk shouldn't cause heat stress issues like the possibilities of an ATV run that I have used in the past.

I learned a long time ago that went coonhunting became work it stopped being fun.
I've done my time trying to push a dog when I worked 10 hour days in the heat and then hunted 4-5 nights a week on top of it. I did enjoy some of it but for the most part it was becoming a 2nd job.
My motivation for coonhunting has completely changed in the last couple years. I no longer care for pushing a dog in the woods during the week so I can win something I no longer value on the weekend.
Unless the weather is unseasonably cool or I have an exciting young pup to mess with, I have no interest in hunting this time of year. Even when I did hunt hard I usually quit around early July and didn't start back again until mid August.

I hunt a couple mornings a week and maybe on the weekend mornings ... I can haul my dog to work and make a turnout or two any morning I feel like it .. if I don't , then I don't .

Funny thing is , some of the locals that "say" they hunt every night and all that stuff ... always seem to have the worst dogs or some different trade dog every time you run into them ... hard hunting to an extreme is for guys that just don't like to be home ... if not for hunting , they'd be at the bar or asleep on a creek bank fishing .

I agree with brogy 100%!!! I only hunt when I want to anymore. I have other priorities in life; I enjoy coonhunting a lot, but on my terms. Used to hunt hard year round, but too many years of hard work and walking miles and miles hunting have taken its toll on my body.I still hunt a lot when its cooler, especially in the winter when my work slows down some.I dont have please anyone but Jr. when its to hunting.

not an ounce of BS in my post . anyone who knows me knows its true.

most of you would have known me as Larry Poe, and the dog in that post was GRNTCHGRCH Robinsons English Looser.

we were in the finals in 07 and hunted all over everywhere before and after.

btw his former owner, larry robinson, hunted him 362 nights in the year before I bought him
