swampers

I'm gittin' old,but I darn sure ain't lazy.I don't like to call my dog off the tree, but believe me,the swamps we hunt around here are terrible.I call 'em "purgatory". It ain't hell--but it's the next best thing from hell.We had a hurricane come thru here back in 2003(can't offhand remember the name of it),and the wind was so bad that it blew the trees back & forth and a lot of 'em blown down. When it did,it just worked up the bottom of the swamps so bad that it is nothin' but muck.Almost like quicksand.I've been stuck in some holes for as long as 5 minutes or longer. That's how bad it is.Now,whoever it was that said for me to put on my "big boy pants" and go to my dog---I want you to come hunt with me just one night and I will pay you $10 to go to my dog and check his tree.

knee high lacrosse boots with a quarter size hole cut in them in each arch. Cross the deep water and they automatically drain on the other side. Nothing like cool swamp water on the old feet on the hot summer nights. Lol

I have seen a dog or two just sit at the edge of the swamp and bay at it while the rest of the cast is treeing in chest deep Gunk in a ol Gator hole off the back swamp of a beaver pond Guy said his dog hadn't ever seen anything like that and he was glad he stayed on the bank lol That swamp has at least 3 pairs of waders lost in it it don't cut you any slack! I have deep black swallow you whole swamp mud that has just as many wild Hogs as Coons We hunt it all the time ya just go get your dog he did his job you do yours!

i wonder how much someone would pay to have their dog fetched off a coon tree. i was thinking some young tough man could get a little equipment and like a wrecker service take calls to fetch a treed dog. it would be better than studying the place for hours looking for an easy way to the dog and then leaving it and comng back in day light. i think $100.00 is a fair price to pay someone to come out at night and fetch your dog for you.

i too prefer the swamps over cliffs, mine shifts, porkys, up or down hill and whitwater. we have clear cuts, green brair and something like multiflora roses here so that's a wash.
rob, i hope you get the new job. i know what you mean about va. beach. it's a mad house there, too much traffic, too many housing develpments. it's gonne be hard to take that fancy kennel with you. maybe you can put it on ebay. with your skills you can build a better one.

Walk, swim, and pray!

Good to be able to call a dog to you when you hunt the swamps a lot.

First of all, I believe coonhunting should be fun!! I hunt some areas that ate pretty tough, but after many years and miles and wet boots, I figured out that its a lot more satisfying to Train a dog to come to me when I want the the dog!! I still dont mind getting wet, but I no longer do the crazy stuff like I used to.Its not worth it.I can recall at least 2 yoyng men that died while trying to swim to dogs; lives lost for no reason .Coon dogs Are Not the most important thing in my life! I love it, but I'll, no longer do crazy things just to satisfy my ego. Be careful hunting, you might want to go tomorrow night. Thanks, Jr. Steelman

A shock collar with a tone button would fix this in a heartbeat. They need to learn when the tone sounds come no matter what. Problem solved!

I actually use the tone for the opposite. If I tone them I expect them to go hunting if they are messing around or bogged down or flat not going hunting. The tone is a warning of what's to come if they don't do their job.
If I'm needing them to come to me for whatever reason I expect to get close enough on them to call them in.
