Another thing about the ray dogs is they're not registered. They are 50 yrs. of line bred big game stock. Blue collar dogs! So if ur lookin for papers, titles, or ribbons u won't get it with a ray dog.

Are they grade dogs or do you know what they are crossed with?

Sound like a real tough fellow this Brutus. Have you ever tried him on bear Damon? He sounds like he would be hard on them.

no offense ,but a gritty coondog doesnt necessarily mean a thing when it comes to bear.ive seen quite a few dogs that would kill coon, kill a porcupine repeatedly , fight other dogs ,and be complete *******s only to be cowards when it comes to a bear(culls). if a dog can kill a coon that is a good prospect for a beardog imo ,but that is all.grit for bear is at a higher level.

I agree it doesn't necessarily mean anything but i do have two coon hounds here that will latch on to a bear. How do i know, i've seen it. I guess that there would a few factors involved in this exception. I do agree not all good coon dogs make good bear dogs but you never know till you try

Ive had coondog bred beardogs that would work a bear and pull fur and stay as long as it took, and visa versa....had bear bred hounds not make the cut.....I believe alot rides on ground time and the company they run with....coon,cat,bear,hog......pups are a blank canvas with the right company a pack that bays tight and works a bear is the key....not all make it but that goes for all strains of hounds...... Some cheerleaders in every line.....

when a coondog bites a bear and gets tagged and goes back for more he can be considered gritty imo . until that point saying how gritty a dog is before it is proven ,because it can kill a coon just doesnt carry the same weight.we are talking about grit .sure there are coondogs that make excellent beardogs i couldnt agree more.people that run just coon that have never experienced the difference in what it takes for a dog to bite a bear vs tackle a coon just dont understand.to them gritty coondog means gritty period.again no offense to coon hunters ,because i hunt them myself just telling what ive experienced .

Had a real kill dog for coon that would run back to the truck and hide under it if he smelled a bear around. A bear smacked him one time and thats all it took.

I had a litter out of old John Rays Moose and my Dixie female.A couple of those have only been coon and cat hunted and are making great dogs at 2 years old.If you want a good cat track dog, keeping them off of those sloppy bear tracks seems to work good. But I sure wouldnt want to go bear hunting with just coon dog breed stock. There are always exceptions, my old Ruby was Swamp Rooster top and bottom, and was a heck of a bear dog.

I got a little pup from glynn and at 6 mo old she ran and treed the first 2 squirrels she ever saw. About as close to natural ability dogs as they come.

a guy i know has a pup coming from john ray it is going to be very pricey for a pup by the time it lands on his doorstep . im very interested to see how it turns out .my buddy said ol man ray told him they are bred not strickly from bluetick from day one.some of it he added was not even hound.but if they are kicking butt in the woods that is what matters.my yard is full of grade dogs .i went with what worked for me.my buddy has run every color ,but is partial to plott.im interested to see if he ends up with a yard full of these ray dogs.
