Very interesting to see these replies....apparently, I live in the wrong state !!! I have never yet had a C-section for much less than $1,000.00, and most of our sections cost a bit more than that !!
In my breed, the normal litter is only from 1 to 3 puppies, so $1,000.00 is a LOT of money to spend, especially if one or more of the puppies are dead.
I have had a good relationship with my local vet for many years; however, about 6 or 7 years ago, I noticed that NONE of the vets (including mine) within a one hour drive were open past 5 pm any more, nor were they open on any weekends or holidays. The only choice was to go to the 'Emergency Clinic', & pay the big fees - or lose the dog & her litter.
I had a long talk about this situation with a couple of vets that I know, & I was told that the young vets & vet techs coming out of vet school simply refused to take a job where they had to work nights, holidays, or weekends. Many of these new graduates had never raised dogs or been around livestock (other than in vet school), and they were looking for jobs with 'banker's hours'. As a result, the older vets were unable to hire anyone to help them with these middle-of-the-night emergencies, so they ended up having to refer after-hours clients to these doggy 'ERs'...
The last C-section that I had done cost me $1,800.00 for 3 puppies. The original estimate that I was given was for less than that, but they claimed they 'ran into some problems' during the section. As my vet said when he saw the ER report that was faxed to him after the surgery, "They've got you over a barrel, & they know it; where else are you going to go for help ?"
Even if I were fortunate enough to need a section during normal business hours, the cost of the section plus all of the additional fees would still run in excess of $800.00...because of this, I have a special charge card that I only use for canine reproductive emergencies...
