What if you are auto feeding and your dog eats a decent amount 30 minutes before you go hunting? Then you stand a chance of a twisted gut.
Auto feeders are a little on the lazy side in my opinion. Your animals need checked on daily so if you are checking on them any way like you should, an auto feeder is unnecessary.

I feed after the hunt. If I hunt close to home and the dog hasn't had much time to cool down then I give half the normal amount and then feed the rest in the morning. If I don't hunt I feed in the evening.
I figure twice a day is probably the best if you are up early. I also have seen dogs throw up 10 hours after being fed and food looked like they had eaten 1/2 an hour before.
It may not matter at all related to twisted stomachs, but that is what has worked for me 20+ years.

I just lost a 3 year old uchtman blue tick 5/6/13.... and he hadn't been hunt in bout 6 days... I work night shift.. got home @8am and feed got up around 4 30 pm and it was to late... he had swelled like a pop belly pig... don't no why hes stomach turned just no I lost a fine hound

Working for a vet the only ones we've seen bloat commonly are danes and labs. Never seems to have anything to do with them eating or excercising, its just them.

When I was growing up we had a 14 year old hound twist his gut. The vet was able to fix it the first time, within a month or so he did it again and had to be put down. It had nothing to do with what or when he ate. He just had weak muscles and was old and the stomach was just able to twist on its own.

I feed mine every 12 hours. Usually at 7am and 7pm. Doesn't matter what I have planned. I prefer them to have eaten something. I've seen plenty of blood sugar issues in dogs. I know what I feel like after not eating all day and being active.

I have seen it happen before in hounds, More in hound crosses. Most time dog dies. I even had a beagle that did it once but that was odd. Always feed after or twice like fellows say early in morning to get out of system. I had a hound field trial dog do it once in 1986. He ran a a hard final 1 mile track thru a plowed field. He was in great (shape 5 miles ad day, 5 days a week type of shape 6 weeks in) value of hound $5000. I did not know that track was such or i would not have ran him. This was with no feed in him and it happened. He simply ran to hard he was all heart. Please do not feed or haul dog long distance right before you hunt. always taking a chance and it is not pretty seeing them die of partinitis.

If you don't have an auto feeder you should feed twice a day. Helps with metabolism and provides nutrition throughout the day. Feeding once a day makes them go for hours with no nutrition for their body to use while rebuilding after a hard hunt. I keep food out 24/7. Never had a problem. They never gorge because they know its always available. The only time they eat a lot is right after a hunt when their body needs it the most.
