Thats why I quit going to the comp hunts back in the early 90's. Was in my late teens early 20's and I think they really thought they could take advantage of me. It pissed me off when it happened to the point I figured I had better just stay away. I Think I would have gotten barred for punchin somebodies face for them. But im really thinking about getting back into the hunts Im older now and have alot more sense. Ive spectated in some big hunts and Ive seen dogs in casts that I could not beleive that they ever night champion or grand night. One of the biggest culls i ever seen was at Autums oaks. He got his butt kicked that night but still how did that dog ever get to that level. I mean that dog was a cull.

Its a big ol white oak tree. I locate the coons eyes way up there. Least 40 feet. Ol buddy proceeds to shoot Coon out. Great shot he out on it BUT it fell out and was a possum lol. Gods honest truth. So don't knowbody tell me I want plus a possum. I might not mean to though.

He claims that never fails to bring out even the tiniest bit of honesty that every has somewhere in them. Whatever works........

Could you do that in UKC? I don't have a rulebook or scorecard handy to look it up.

Well yeah, you could leave the collar but UKC doesn't have any provisions for taking a panel or MOH back out to look at the tree.

If there was a coon or not, what would be the odds it would still be there when everyone came back maybe hours later. My opinion is leaving your collar in the woods would be nothing but a waste of time.

Not if they were circling a slick tree

the hunts are getting out of hand with people tring to get a win on a no account hound, in reality the only one there fooling is there selves.
if these guys will put in as much time training there dog as they do learning how to try and manufacture a good score all the casts will be better.

There may be some ruling or policy that prohibits video equipment on a cast but I'm not aware of it. As far as I know, you can carry a cam on the cast. What you CAN'T do is use a cam to effect the outcome of a hunt, either by taking a pic of a coon in a hollow tree or by videoing something and using that as evidence before the MOH. If you think videoing a hunt would increase honesty, ask UKC about it. Or Dave Haugh. I think he has more knowledge about this.

My point is there really needs to be some out side the box thinking to curb this, alot of clubs are going under and the number of honest hunters are staying away from the hunt's that are still around. guy's spend alot of time and money training there hound getting it hunt ready then things like this happens, the honer rules do not seem to be working any more, do you agree?

Lol. I like that idea also, believe in other kc you can mark the tree with your garmin as long as your dog is leashed, so the collar might be handy. UKC I have said it before, they need a rule where you can take panel back to the tree, would help keep a little more honest if knew they could get called on it? jmo

Maybe im just extremly lucky..... I go to quite a few hunts in the 2 major KCs. and i just dont see all these cheaters, liers and crooks.
Its been a long time since i have even seen a question brought back to a clubhouse to be presented.
Almost every day there is a negative thread about the hunts and the same handful of people who openly admit either they dont competition hunt or havent in years pile on with the negative comments on a message board that is provided FREE for their use by the same kennel club that they love to trash.
If you complainers care about this sport stop and think about the young person that is considering getting involved in the hunts, he comes on this board and reads a bunch of this sore looser crap and decides he had better steer clear of those UKC. events.
The reality is if you prepare your dog and know the rules the VAST majority of your casts will be fun, you will meet alot of great people and will get to see some nice hounds. JMO.

John Duemmer

Your right, we do need to think about it.
Also jdoverspike don't give up yet their are alot of good people out there, have had alot of good hunts versus bad. And I remember a few years back drawing a cast with 2 young guys 18 to 20 they really didn't have the rules down and one young man was his first hunt, things came up and I explained to the best of my knowledge the rules. Remember how these young guys were ready to circle my obvious slick snag on the edge of a creek, I could have won this cast, they explained coon could be in the bank, I said no guys minus him if it were in the bank he should be showing it, we all shook hands the young guy won the hunt and was so proud of the win ,think he came in 3rd we talked a long time at the truck about dogs and hunts, Had a great night( they walked my butt off) but was a pleasure and this young guy went on to make a GR.Nite dog and some other wins.Something I or maybe he will not forget, we still shake hands at the hunts when I see him and talk..But how would I have felt about that win if I stole it from him? Probably not very good about it and he would of found out that I did cheat him out of a win. I like for my dog to win it and sometimes he does and I throw it away LOL.. Keep after it newbys and there is more good hunts than bad, but read them rules over and over, I still have trouble with them from time to time.. Good luck all. (Sorry so windy LOL)

Yep had this tried on a young handler running my fred dog, Treed on a river bottom cottonwood tree at least 80 footer, Three "ol boys" well thats a possum not a coon up there 60 ft, then well maybe spider eyes, He held his ground and they plussed it but it took him standing firm and not letting them run over him.

John is right Ive been coon hunting 30 years and Ive only brought one question back on a cast and it was a 2 to 2 tie vote in woods so I put my 25 bucks up and lived with the panel decision no big deal . Ive drawn some jokers that will try stuff to see if they can get away with it all you have to do is know the rules call them on their BS and pack a better hound than the other guys . you will win your share and loose some to . when your beat tell everyone you got out dogged and leave it at that . The only thing I really think that should be changed or added to help UKC hunts would be to add an unsolicited advice rule . Let the judge make his call then if someone disagreed ask for a cast vote . scratch the guy trying to influence or run the cast . I love hunting in both KC but the other seems to be more enjoyable and less mularky . Im sure there are some wild stories I just havent seen it pulled on me . Knowing the rules and being an adult / gentleman and politely questioning or challenging things you know are not right have served me well .

They are called "honor" rules. To those of us who believe in honor there is no problem.
However it doesn't matter what the sport or the game if someone thinks they can cheat and win then they will cheat and win.
Coon hunting, Golf, darts, poker etc. it doesn't matter "cheaters gonna cheat"
I've met some cheaters, I've drawn out and hunted against some cheaters.
But (and this is a huge BUT), the quality people I've met and the good people I've met at these hunts more than makes up for having to deal with the culls.
When I sign your dog up your doing it because you want to win, heck, I'm planning on winning....if the chips will just fall my way.
But I'm not going to cheat to do it because I have to stand up and look at myself in the mirror in the mornings, and I have to like what I see looking back at me. I represent not just myself but my wife, my children, my relationship with God and yes even that flea bitten hound on the end of my lead.
And they deserve no less than an honest man.
