I've owned both style of dogs and own one of each now .well sorta .The Fred bear dog is usually in a ways with a coon alone . Not 100% loner but usually alone . Banjo trees more coon per acre in a cast and could probably beat him in most situations . Fred bear is a coondog but goes to extremes in a cast and will sometimes run past a couple here and there . He learned to go deep at too young of an age. Depends on the dogs he draws

I drew two of these "deep and lonely" dogs in the Purina casts a few years ago hunting my Banjo dog . It was tough out an they did get deep but in the long run they got mowed over by banjo . Banjo treed the only 4 coon behind the other dogs and they weren't easy coons . Kills me when people tell me just because a dog trees coons close and within reasonable distance that they where easy coon or if a dog burns a track or jams a pop up it gains the title hot nosed .

In the long run people don't want to make the coon treer because its way too hard of work to make one.

You give me a coondog that will go in strike run and tree a coon every drop with or without company and make zero mistakes and not be influenced by the other dogs you have what's called a coondog and a winner .... Not just a winner

My opinions vary in the subject from time to time . But it's still irritating walking to a dog deep in a cast and shining coon on the way to him and thinking man O man . Banjo woulda went crazy in here .

But I guess I just want a combination of the two

Good dogs are going to be alone much of the time...thats just the nature of the game.

In the last 10 years I have seen a move to these dogs that are ALWAYS alone.....to a fault.

IMO this is not healthy for the sport....It seems to me more of a shortcut to win a few more casts.

I can't stomach or trust a dog that passes up coon or coon scent for any reason .. to get alone , because another dog is mean , or he's having a bad night ... anything.

A dog that chooses what coon he wants to run , when and such ... is a dog that knows he can trick you and do what he wants and when ... and I don't trust that they are honest or won't quit coon or that they don't pull up on dens when they want.

I want a dog that looks for coon , finds ones and whose whole existence is for the love of coon scent ... the other dogs will mess up enough on their own to make an honest dog look good .. no need to go out of your way to see that , lol.
