It's more like they have no idea what the dog IS doing. We are now seeing the dumming down of your basic coonhunter today with the Garmin in such common use. Dog work is now a set of stats, how far, how long, average speed........not a clue what that dog is actually doing out there but total control over where they are, where they been, average speed, etc. It's what they are doing that matters.
Nat and Patches can argue about HOW they should do it, that just different strokes for different folks, but at least they KNOW what the dang dog is doing out there. A 13 mile coon chase? Sorry, but somebody don't know what their dog is chasing.
Jim, I leave my garmin off most of the time... If its not off its in my pouch snapped shut. All the garmin does is give you a location.... I am a very hands on trainer and there is nothing worse than the 3 times a year that I pleasure hunt with someone, there nose is stuck in there garmin like the screen is showing nudey movies.
On the bean subject... I live in Indiana... I know what beans are and I know how many dogs can get bogged down in them. More often than not the dogs get hung up an keep making the same loop over and over and over... I've been standing on field edges when the coons come out of
The beans and sit there and watch them go up a tree on the edge while the dogs continue to make the endless Circle... A good smart track dog will get it lined out and finish it. If the coon is in the beans, he better Climb or die if he's got a track dog behind him. I know what edge hunters are... I know what dogs that quit tracks and slam coon on the edge are.. And that's not close to way what I'm talking about. EVERY dog will eventually have a track he can't finish... But good ones will put trees on the end of the ones most of em can't finish!
Glad to see you back Skip!!! Saw where you were having back problems I believe. Hope everything is well up there!
