Hmmmm, Coke or Pepsi, they are basically the same thing to me and to most people out there. As long as it will strike and tree coons who cares?

I picked English over 30yrs ago for 2 reasons. 1) I didnt have to worry about what color they were born. 2) I had some fairly big names in the breed at the time working with me and pushing me towards the breed lol....

Alot of English people dont realise it, but the father of the Redticks, Mr Kelly Stagner, accualy prefered the red/blue dogs like the one in the first pic. tri tick he called them :/

He tried his best to get a Redtick breed in the days when the walkers and Blueticks were splitting but couldnt get it done.....all the while quietly wishing for more red/blue pups to be born in his whelping boxes. I never quite understood that. Esp when as the red faded over generations he knew he had to breed blue in to darken it back up.......prob the only one who realised that fact back then.

I've got both and have had good luck with both but I prefer the blue ones. Like someone else said to me they seem to have a better nose and be more independent and thats what I like, a loner that can move a track and have a coon. But if its what you like your gonna defend it so it may just be in our heads, lol

Like Travis said I don't breed for color. but do have 1 redtick. 1 blue. and 1 white and black. and hunt all 3. never had a tri color hound YET. But maybe someday. i'll hunt any hound but it has too have SUNKIST BLOOD IN THERE. Too me that is what makes a great hound dog for me.

out of curiosity, cant you breed for color and ability at the same time? I like the tricolor but dont own any English dogs so I cant test my theory but I know its possible in Walker dogs and Red dogs, so why couldnt you do it in English dogs?

LOL

English is supposed to be all colors LOL where do you think the other colors came from? The English is supposed to be all colors. the dogs color does not dictate it's abilities. Most of you have been around long enough now that you should have hunted with good English hounds of all color combos LOL. LOL. going to improve the English Breed by breeding for color? LMAO! join the color defined breeds lol

I guess my question for the "knowledgeable " breeders is this, why???? Why the difference in traits and ability within a breed. Color can't be the determining factor, it is a result of genetics. What is the dog or line contributing so heavy to the blue success for those who prefer them.
I own a blue, a black / white, two reds and a ref/white. Like to think I'm an equal opportunity employer!!!

Many people will disagree with what I am about to say in my reply to what BCotton just asked. For years I would'nt own a blue English it had to be redtick red/white or white/red now I perfer blue although I still have redtick red/white and white/red hounds. In my opinion it seems as the blues have colder noses more houndiness and a huge bawl mouth more so then the other colors do. Not in all cases but it seems to be more consistant then the other colors. Why? In my opinion it is the bluetick gene. If your hunting a blue english are you hunting a blue english or a american bluetick? I uesd to say if I wad gonna hunt blues I would get me a bluetick. It all comes down to preference. But in my experience the redticks red/whites and the white/reds have lost or are losing thier houndiness mouth and nose. They seem hotter nosed choppy or squeaking mouthed. I personaly dont like a chop on track and tree in the same hound and cant stand a squeaky mouth. At the same time I dont want a bawl mouth track dog to be a bawl mouth tree dog. But that seems to be what I am getting from my blues. But in that same bawl mouth tree dog it has a enough of the good stuff to not let the bawl mouth at the tree keep me from wanting blues. In all honesty I think if your hunting a blue english your are hunting more of a american bluetick then you are an english. Because of thier traits. Breeders have bred alot of hound traits out of most every breed. If you want to disagree thats fine but step back away from your pride and evaluate your hound. Nose ability mouth and looks. I want my hound to look act and sound like a hound reguardless of breed or color. I have owned every color in the English breed including black/whites tri colors and white/blacks even the rare chocolates. At the end of the day it comes down to what you want in a hound. In my opinion I had to turn to the blues to get what I am wanting I am not saying its not in the other colors because I know it is. But it is harder to find it to be consisant. I have been breeding english since 1989 and hope to for the rest of my life but I am not to proud to own any color or any breed that is a coon dog... Thier is a huge difference between coon dogs and a dog that can tree a coon but thats a different subject. JMO...

Blues

I am new to the English breed been a walker man all my life but got a blue English that I love bought him as a pup and trained him myself. He has the craziest mouth I ever heard and now has gone silent on track but I love hunting him every chance I get. Now my wife want one with a big bawl mouth trying to find one any suggestion?

You never know what you're going to get. even if you breed blue on blue. Somewhere down the line there will be red.

I like red or blue . But this new dog of mine I like a lot to be blue . I don't think color has much to do with it but I have seen more trail dogs come out of the blue or white pups . That doesn't mean anything I haven't been around to many red ticks but I like them redticks a lot to

DDL I live beside east tn and yeah the old folks I bear hunt with recognize the redtick as a separate breed apart from a English . They think redticks are redticks , blue ticks are blue ticks and English are white and black dogs . The old timers don't think that a English redtick can have blue
English pups . Or the opposite .
