Dirt devil what state are you in? OK? Dr. o'Hanlon does surgical implants but he switched to a Mini Vidas for progesterones and I don't think he has his numbers down yet.
I do trans cervical inseminations with frozen semen. No anethesia, no slicing open, no sutures. Bitch is wide awake and standing. I breed all my greyhounds this way. But......timing is THE most important aspect of breeding. If your timing is wrong you won't have puppies.
Cost.....a few have mini vidas machines. These are NOT the same as using a radioimmunoassay or and Immulite machine. Most all vets will send off blood serum to a lab. I have seen $45 a test to $110 a test. You DO NOT need a repro vet to pull blood and send off serum. Just make sure they DO NOT use a serum separator tube and use a plain red top tube. Let blood clot for 30+ minutes and spin at 3200rpm for 15 minutes. Take serum off and put in new clean red top tube and send off to lab.

blocksporthound, u seperated x and y, intentionally,I understand that.
What about the early vs late breeding, for gender #'s.
What's ur opinion on that practice?

I guess it would make sense that y cells move faster because they weigh less. So if you breed a day earlier...they *might* beat the x cells to the egg. Mostly I would not put much stock in that practice. If you truly want male or female heavy....seperate it. Although the way I described is archaic at best it would still up your chances much more than the breed early/breed late thing. Also you breed too early or too late...you miss. Do not forget when using fresh semen the cells go through a "change" before they can fertilize a cell and also eggs are ready to be fertilized 72 hours from ovulation. Nothing is going to change that fact. Determining ovulation is key. Bitches are due 63 days from ovulation...not 63 days from breeding.
Ok have an emergency breeding coming in right now....pair didn't tie...semen in a Baggie! Lol

Hey guys ,You got to remember one big exception to the early /late breeding.That is the assumption that the male releases the X/Y sex chromosomes equally 50/50.
So in real life that probably would have a bigger influence on the outcome of your litters male/female ratio.
Ever notice that some males seem to reproduce a higher rate of either males or females?
I would bet almost all of us know of some human families that have all boys or all girls .I can sure name a few.

Yeah seems to strike up alot of opinions. I bred a female once and actually had to hold her because she never would stand she had 11pups. Tomorow will be day 11. I am going to drive her 8 hours and have her bred. I hope shes ready. The vet did a progestrone test friday and said she wasnt quite ready. They said they could do another test monday but the labs would be closed tue for holidays. and wouldnt no nothin till wed. and by then they said could be past her time. After telling them monday would be day11 they said she could be ready by then . Her levels friday was 0.7 and needs to be 2.0 . So the advice they give me was just go and have her bred and let nature do its thing. The problem I have is when I stood her against a male today she somewhat stood. And when I got her home she was bleeding again. If it wasnt so far away it wouldnt bother me but 8 hours away and she dont stick. I ll be sick. Alot of u would say wait a day or 2 but im off for holidays and return wed. to work. And wont be off again till sat.

0.7 is very very early! 2.0 would be her LH surge. You would breed natural 4 days AFTER her surge if doing natural. Ovulation is around 5-8ng/ml. You would breed 2 days after that. So. If say Sat she was a 2.0 (which I doubt) probably more like a 2 on Sunday....but for argue nets sake lets say she was a 2 Sat. That would make her needing to be bred on Wed. At the EARLIEST!!! Anything prior to ovulation, you are just spinning your wheels. I would pull a test today and wait for the results on Wed.

What is the longest you have seen a dog bleed during thier cycle. I ve heard some bleed all the way through their cycle.

I have seen them bleed and OVULATE on day 20+. They are almost always still bleeding when I breed them. Honestly, color of blood, how swollen or not they are, and flagging are not good indicators of determining when to breed. I have seen bitches flag that were a week away from breeding.

Getting ready to leave for Grand American!! See you there! Got to give my muddy puppy a quick bath and then we are headed down there!! See you all there this afternoon!
