i want a dog to hunt no futher then i can hear them strike.were i hunt theres no roads to drive on so i have to be able to hear them strike. ive hunted with plenty of deep hunting dogs around here that would not come back until treed and usually found them when the sun was comming up the next morning.

So how yall teach these dogs how far to go? Its been my experience. They either go or don't go. No middle ground. I guess cause I consider 3 or 400 yards not going lol. Culls! Merry Christmas

I have several two mile sections I hunt , cast at one end and can hunt them out ... a dog leaving them or driving to the other side would be pretty pointless .

I don't like missing the race and locate .... that's the whole point of being out there to me , I get nothing from driving around and finding a dog already treed ... I don't know how he treed , who treed first and I didn't get to hear it .

My better dogs would and will hunt into the middle of a section and get struck a half mile deep or deeper if they seem to have a whiff or sense that something is in there .... but if they get to that point and have to either cross the road or leave the country , I want them to come back ...

I am the one that decides which sections we hunt , not the dog ... a dog that learns he can jerk you around on one thing , will jerk you around on alot of things ... it's just their nature.

I have hunted places where there were fewer houses and you could drive around alot without getting into trouble ... but those places usually have fewer coon and more hunting pressure and it's just not fun for me ....

how far?

i make sure i break all my dogs to the tone button. if i tone them they need to change dirrection or return to me. this doesnt always work, somtimes they get out of range before i decide to tone them but it helps put a handle on them in alot of bad situations. i to like a dog that will hunt around instead of a stright line with or without company. i perfer my dogs to hunt with me for coon. dog hunting is not real fun.

This time of year (Dec.) coons and coon tracks are very few and very far between around here. We have one mile sections and I have seen time and again our dog put on two miles, sometimes even three miles hunting out a section. She seldom crosses blacktop, but will hunt right out the next road then turn around and hunt her way back. Around here, how deep isn't what matters, it's how hard they hunt that counts. If they hunt out the patch, travel out and back on every fence row, hit the next patch over, they will eventually get after one most of the time. If they don't I'm ready to move and so is she.
Around here, how deep isn't the issue, what counts is how hard they go at it.

x2 but got 1 that will run a branch tell strikes, likes to be alone, only seen him back 1 dog ever! If treed in general area with other dogs will most likely be split unless others backed him, usually deep and lonely but will strike and take 1st track cold or hot and drift it out, next time you hear him he will usually have pulled away from other dogs with the grease or legit den but has pulled slick on a few persimmons Not a good puppy trainer will not normally check another dog..But has been that way from birth and hunted mostly by himself when young, but is passing trait to his off spring like em independant and full of going desire, don't want to see em tell I call em in..or pull off the wood. but to each their own right . Merry Christmas!!

I was sitting here thinking, every now and then the subject comes up about trespassing and hunting places where people do not have permission. All of you guys have seen those threads. I bet if those threads were revived and the ones on those threads were regular users of the forum, a man would probably find where the same ones wanting a go yonder dog are the same ones who think someone getting somewhere they did not have permission are low down scum!
How does that work? If I had a go yonder dog like you guys are talking about, there would be one place and one place only I could hunt it and that would be the game land that has no game!
I promise you that nearly 100% of the time my dog would be on someone else if he hunted that deep at my other spots! My old dog does not hunt that deep and he still ends up treed on someone else about 50 percent of the time!
Much of this conversation just makes no sense unless you guys wanting the go yonder dogs do not mind trespassing. I know all of you do not own or can't know that many people who owns miles of land that have given you permission!!!!

When I cut mine loose, THEY BETTER LEAVE HUNTING!!! I love a HARD HUNTING DOG! I can't stand a hot nosed STRAIGHT LINER, that just blows through the country til they find a track they are able to run. If nothing is moving, and they hunt hard for 30mins or so and come back, I can handle that. But they better leave the lead strap HUNTING, and if they OPEN they better get TREED.

Yeah Im getting to old for these straight line dogs nowdays. Id love to see a good cur go myself. They say they tree coons behind hounds. Well the gates are closed on our state lands. 28,000 ac right above the house. Be nice to tree em close to the truck. Problem is ain't none close or maybe its the dogs we hunt. I wanna see it proved to me a short, close or even medium hunter can tree them here consistently with no feeders. Anybody wanna come show me?

I have a dog ive been working with for about 2 years now she is almost 3 and she is just what i like in a dog 200 yrds tops while hunting but will drive a track till its treed bawl on track clean sharp locate and chop on tree she chews and i dont care for that but ill deal with it she wont strike in until shes pretty hot on the coon and she usually brings it back to me like a rabbit dog. i took her to one pkc hunt she showed me what i wanted to see at 2 yrs old my pleasure dog about 75%accurate my opinion is id rather have a smart dog than a go out across the country for no reason dog if your drop is decent the dog should find the coon there i love watching her work zig zag on the ground but still wind a coon till she finds a track........ If other dogs are packed up she will leave the pack and circle them cut the coon off and tree it last strike first tree shes honest 90% of the time but if she runs up on a possom she will kill it guess she just dont like em but thats what i expect out of a dog minuse the possom and chewing lol

I try to get permission from all around the spots I hunt, but true they do get to areas I don't have permission once in awhile, but years ago we could turn loose any where with no problems(leased grnd has hurt) but I'll still take a hound packed full of desire that will find a coon some where and have the meat when I get there. Happy hunting, have fun and stay safe to all..

I dont mind if mine comes back after a half hour or so...if he cant get struck within hearing, it can make for a longgggg nite here with the hills...and dangerous with the roads...if they hunt the woods they were turned out in and come back i will try another spot or head home if its knowingly a bad nite...

My current dog i thought was going to check in after a half hour or so....now that hes a year and a half and ive hunted him on some rough nites i found thathe is gunna go till he finds a coon...been many times he struck and treed and i never heard it....i dont hate him for it....impressive that he has the drive to go and find a coon...especially as far as ive found him treed under a coon...

I am in good coon and unless the nite is plain bad, a dog dont usually gotta gofar to get struck...
