Population is way down . Alot of younger coon died in the drought here . Been treeing the breeding stock. That's my opinion could be wrong. Worst season ever here

DANIEL , DONT THINK IT HAS ANYTHING TO DO WITH THE DROUGHT. SPOT AND ROCK ARE COVERING ABOUT EVERY SQUARE INCH OF TRI-COUNTY AND MONGO TO GET TREED. AND YOU KNOW THERE IS LESS WATER THAN NORMAL, BUT STILL PLENTY IN THE LAKES AND THE PIGEON RIVER. I AM ACTALLY ENJOYING SEEING THEM HAVING TO GO FIND A COON FOR A CHANGE. USUALLY OUR COON DEN UP IN MID DECEMBER RIGHT BEFORE THEY START THE RUT. I WOULD SAY IT ABOUT A MONTH EARLIER THIS YEAR. GET AHOLD OF ME AND WE WILL TAKE A HUNT. I WOULD LIKE TO SEE HANK GO AGAIN. HE HAS THE MAKINGS OF A FINE HOUND.

I cetainly am a moon phase coon hunter, I haven't been coon hunting in the last several days. I hate those nights when it is still, cold, and moonlit as daytime. I just run my day dogs but the fact is that the squirrels have not been moving either. Go to www.sqdog.com and you can see the squirrel hunters complaining. My rabbit dogs have been doing good.

As a daytime tree dog hunter, I know for a fact I tree more coon in the daytime under certain phases of the moon.

Coon

Toughest I have seen in a long time in Michigan. Could it have anything to do with the largest harvest in U.S. history last year?

In Iowa, it probably has to do with our late freeze in the spring that froze the mulberries and the coon were hungry. They moved to feedlots and I heard that some hauled pickup loads off from fly bait.

its a possibility mother nature is looking after them. heard some say you could not hurt coon population in some states up north on here a while back. don't buy into it.
have heard some say the same about squirrel populations and now they can't tree any cause they shot everyone of them out they treed in the areas they hunt.

The longest track we have hit all season is about 250 yards. We started treeing dens the day after thanksgiving. Had some boys calling coyotes noticed that they were starting to see coon climb when they were using locate howls. And, we've got more guys hunting the same spots now. That's another problem in itself but a guy has to hunt somewhere.

We hunt year round and had a coyote problem all spring, summer and fall. A guy told me about killing a yote while deer hunting and it had a young coon in its mouth.

Also maybe the rut is in early? I have seen more coon on the road in the last couple weeks than the whole year. They have def been moving around. Seen 2 within a couple miles of each other in Mid Ga....even one a main road that has woods near it and little patches between houses. He was on the way somewhere to get something to be where he was considering the other way has 1000's of acres and he was going into town. Just a thought with this unusual cold weather in GA. Dont seem like I ever see this amount of coon on the road until rut comes in. Or they are moving during the day. Get reports of deer hunters seeing em travel in the day and know last year when that was happening we got on some tracks the dogs wallered on for a while before they figured it out..cold cold tracks..

Around here in Illinois, the coon always seem to lay up from Thanksgiving to after Christmas. After Christmas, you can often find a boar moving. The rest of the time, it is inconsistant as to when the coon are moving. Just before a front moves through, you can get a night or 2 they are moving. On those clear, cold, moonlit nights nights where you can hear a house dog barking 2 miles away, there could be a coon moving somewhere but I wouldn't know, I stay at home.
