that's what I did too, before I built the kennel building with inside boxes that is.
in fact I just burned the last of them a week or so ago, and it was either 22 or 23yrs ago I built them :0
the plastic barrels are easy to clean and disinfect, and the wood and insulation (I used that expanding foam stuff) keeps it warm in the winter. I never liked just the bare barrel houses.
