Frankenstein, I just was'nt clear what part of the training you where refering to. I agree 100 percent that letting a pup get ate up is pretty stupid. However, once that dog is around a year old, they quit being a pup. If as a handler you feel the pup, young dog, however you want to classsify it, is mature enough to take a good nip on the nose or ear without any set backs, I don't see a problem with a good scrap once in a while. I know alot of reputible people that incorporate this into their training regiment under SUPERVISED conditions. Meaning your there controlling the action yourself or with an older more experienced dog to pile in and help the pupil out. Every dog is different, you can't put an age on it.

not all dogs need an asswhoopen by a coon but someneed one to light that fire to hate the coons to turn the switch on in thier heads it might be hard to believe but my buddy had a black dog that wouldn't tree even if you prayed to god for his help we cut a hole just big enough for the dog to stick his nose in put a coon in the bucket pull it up the tree when that black dog stuck her nose in that hole that coon went to town on her took her out that that it was like she had been doing it all her life she just needed a nicebeaten from the coon I breed for track more then I do tree I want a track dog that tree not a tree dog that can somewhat track.

I guess I prefer the abilities and habits to come naturally rather than manmade. If I have to manipulate or teach any of these traits then I feel the pup was short bred to start with and I want no part of it or it's likes. But I'm kinda strange to start with. Goodluck to all.

every man his own I just try to keep walkers like they were not this tree happy idiots they have today they can't drive a track so most of them have to get a good beat down to turn that switch on but they are layup pros.

I think we all would rather have natural than man made. Just alot easier anyway you look at it. Sometime with both natural and manmade you have to find the right trigger. Good luck to all.

Reading these post made me think of something Mr. John Wick told me many, many years ago. I was probably a teenager myself when he told me this and honestly I don't think it registered with me at the time. After training many young dogs and a couple children myself, I think I finially realized what he meant. What he told me was to think of training a pup as if teaching a 5 year old child. Patience, consistency, repetition, be gentle but firm, and a lot more patience. This method works!
Many people have comented to me over the years how lucky I was to have had so many good hounds. Believe me, I do feel honored and blessed, as I have had a lot of good hounds & even a few great hounds. I learned a long time ago, the more I hunted the luckier I got, lol.

i dont know much bout training dogs, but in my opinion and what little ive fooled with dogs, letting a dog fight a coon aint going to make them any better. good breeding and hunting the pads off their feet is the only way i know how to make a coon dog.
