Before the last camper leaves the fairgrounds, those of us that care for the lost and abandoned animals of this community will begin to get calls about dogs that have been left behind. Dogs are taken out on nigh
t hunts and after chasing down terrified raccoons, the dogs that fail to return are often left behind, “poor performers” in the hunt. Those dogs soon begin to show up at farms and homes, frightened and hungry. Many will not survive, victims of automobiles, disease, starvation.
Hunters should, at the very least, be required to leave with as many dogs as they arrived with. A substantial donation to the groups in the area that care for their abandoned dogs might also help. Not all events that include dogs and people are happy events for the animals."

Yhis makes us coon hunters look awsome !!!!!

Owners need to take care of their own hounds or leave em at home! And as far as pups and dogs left behind, if caught Barr Em for 5 to 10 years. jmo

Leaving pups at AO

Another instance of leaving pups . At the morel we were staying , Sunday morn I look out and see a crate of 4puppies behind Cracker Barrel ,no water some food and not a soul around,I get the manager from Cracker Barrel and we proceed to check out the puppies and she goes to get water then from over at the motel this woman and 2 children wander over and ask if we want them and she say that they brought 9 and sold 5 so these were left over's. So with the publicity now happening she get her husband? and the load them up.(from VA.)I do hope they did not dump them on the way Home. Some people do not deserve pets or children.IMO.

Those big hunts surely bring in enough money to the city and it's businesses to cover the cost of euthanizing a few extra dogs along with the ump-teen in the pound from their own locals ....

... folks can never bring up an issue with blowing it out of proportion to make them look more right than they really are.

... you come across abandoned dogs , well ... that aint a coonhunter thing .. that's just a sorry thing that all groups of dog owners do ...

.. don't really matter who or why it's left , and the dog getting put down or starving don't know it's a coonhound or care why he was left ....

he's gonna end up " humanely euthanized" by those caring souls that think they are better than everyone else ... well , ask those shelter dogs how glad they are to have been rescued and humanely put down ....

See....this is where the difference of opinions comes in. I'm not saying I couldn't have missed one (some) but I drove the whole grounds more than a few times and I did not see one of the typical problem dog traders and I did not see "lots of dogs that looked starved to death".

I spent a lot of time walking around also. Talking to people and looking at dogs. I didn't see the STARVED dogs they are talking about. Most dogs this year looked like they were taken care of. How many people posting on this thread were actually at AO this year? Word to the PETA posters on here, remember it has been proven that PETA KILLS over 97% of animals they RESCUE!

Not commenting on anyone specifically but a lot of non-hunters look at hard hunted hounds and judge them to be starving when I would just judge them to have been hunted down very hard.

Google Purina dog body score chart. They have a chart with drawings and a narrative describing what a dog should look like. I was at AO and saw a couple of dog that may have been underweight. There were several more that were not in the condition I want my dogs in either. I am the director of animal control in the county where I live and talk with lots of people about thin dogs. The complainant usually owns a dog that is obese. 8 or 9 on the chart. Has anybody ever seen a long distance runner that is overweight? Make sure to buy a good quality feed and keep your dog wormed.

this is a shame

There are so many young hunters out there would love to have a pup to start. Man if you dont want the pups dont breed, but there are alot of folks that breed dogs to have pups to take to the big hunts just to sale and theres the folks that breed to sell pups to make a living and thers nothing wrong with that. Just dont breed dogs to sell pups to take to hunts and sale and when you leave and leave them if you know you not gonna take them home give them to a kid to love and give them a nice home either to hunt or just to have them a pet. TO ME ITS BETTER TO GIVE A PUP AWAY THEN TO LEAVE IT TO STARVE OR FOR SOMEONE ELSE TO HAVE TO FIND A PLACE FOR THEM. JMO

I didn't attend oaks this year but have the previous few years and I never saw a down right starved hound . Seen several dog jockeys but most looked fair to good to me . If I buy a dog I don't want it to be as big around as a freakin barrel , I want one in hunting shape . I've asked for a number on the hounds that where left and no one has posted a number that I've seen , so iam calling this bs as well , and if it's not please prove me wrong cause this would be a complete outrage if this was true .

I stopped at the Cracker Barrel with friends and our RVs Sunday morning and we parked right in front of that cage of blue pups. I wondered about them and thought maybe they'd been put over away from the motel because they were noisy. Didn't really care much for the way they were just setting over there alone, not the way I care for mine but they were all gone when we came out.

I was there drove around the fairgrounds three times sunday afternoon. I didnt see any pups or dogs left behind. I had heard this had happened before. i would have taken them home and fed them there are always youngsters looking for a dog so i would have helped them out. It is not coonhunters doing this if it is going on. I have ten different kinds of dogs dumped by my house and my wife feeds and worms them and finds them homes. People trying to make a fast buck do this kind of crap and it gives everybody a black eye. Just my two cents
