I used to bear hunt and coon hunt the same dogs.My black and tans would tree bear or coon. But I just coon hunt now and I do see a difference in their tracking and treeing ability but when I was bear hunting we trained all year.Where as coon hunting Ididnt have them in the woods as much. But I think it most definitely has an effect on how quick they start and how hard they tree. Not so much on the trailing though.

dogs

Cold trailing depends on when u hunt and where you hunt.
I coon hunt more in the daytime than at nite and my best trailing dog ( a walker ) could smell a two day ( coon ) trail and when he treed or bayed as often happened, well he had the coon. This type of dog is rare but i have had more than one and different breeds too. I had a plott female that has tracked coons for miles and hours and have the coon as well. Not many coonhunters would want a dog like this but mine are trained in the daytime and if they make it when u go nite hunting they will show you alot of coons.

I run blueticks if it matters

Most dont agree but i think it would improve the drive that alot of the hunters claim is lacking in the dogs now a days. but coonhunters (comp) are stuck on their lines and keep crying but wont go to something new. their tuff luck, not mine. some wont ever listen but only to themselves. their loss.

Smoking Bluedog, I'll give ya my opinion for what it's worth. I got a utchman dog that just might be the best I've had in fourty years, but my cameron will smoke him on a bad track. On a good track it's a horse race, but on a rough one the Cameron will pick up his head and blow outa the country and the Utchman will labor the same track. The Camerons mom was a cat dog and two of his brothers are bear dogs. All I've ever run him on is coon. He's getting old now and he'll die here, he's earned it.

Kenneth

it doesnt matter on breed to me. we had 2 very good Utchman dogs that we ran on coon and bear. they were quick and i liked them alot and would of kept the blue line also but when we bred them, only one turned out. so i guess it wasnt the right cross.the male was a big lanky dog and the female smaller and streamlined. i like all hounds and red is where it worked for me. always wanted a cameron dog also but just never happened across one at the right time. i like a good dog and i dont know if its luck that the red dogs worked for me or wut. i keep them in the woods alot and that sure helps. i just think a guy can run them on coon, cat, and bear with success and the more you keep them in the woods the better they are. i dont think the hounds these days are missing anything. but maybe a certain dog is. they are not the same and you can get a good one and then a average one. heres a pick of the 2 we had. the female died of old age and her and a pup treed a bear at 13 and the male had a bear bail out when coonhunting and landed on him and broke his back. i do think if u r missing drive that a biggame line may help. jmo and there are alot of very good big game blue dogs to choose from if u decided to go that route. take care
