Hi Lee,
I like the results of the pups out of his only litter and my old line of hounds that were predominately McDonalds Rider Tom and McDonalds Little Cole (who both had the same sire and dam; I believe, but John McD. may jump in here and correct me!) The hounds made coondogs at young ages and were more open on the track, and they were very strong tree dogs. I believe I got more on the track than what Hobie has, and they are very good on layups.
Out of the 8 I had:
1 female in Lakeview Michigan owned by Bruce Carlson...she made a very independent coondog before she was a year old.
1 female I kept, the runt of the litter. She was a little slower starting, but then came on strong when she was a year old. She is tighter on track than most.
1 male I sold at 10 months old that was running and treeing, a real pretty bawl and slobbermouth, both paws strattling the tree, he would totally lockdown the tree.
1 male the neighbor kid got, he was helping out on the farm and wanted a pup, who started at 4 months old, he had no fear, would pile into a coon and go until he dropped. He is called Smokey and is in the last yearbook ad. This dog would be in competition, but the kid doesn't hunt him only about 2 times a month.
1 male got killed in a road before he was 10 months old while trailing on a coon. He was running and treeing and was a hard hunter at the time.
1 male went to michigan, he is up near Bruce and from what he told me he made a coon hound, but was a little slow starting. I don't think the original owner was hunting him, and when he got into the woods he took off. It was funny this hound was sent down to your state and put in a training program (fenced 50 acre coon pen) and failed and was branded to be shot. The first owner was going to do away with him, and then my friend Bruce told the guy to let him work with him a little bit before, and when he was put into wild coon he took off.
1 male a girl bought because her boyfriend coonhunted. They broke up and the dog was given away to a neighbor as a pet, he is a good looking hound with a good mouth. I took him out at 4 months old and got a coon down to him and he piled right into it and then treed on it when I threw it up in a crotch of a tree. The girl never had him out since. I finally tracked him down and got him into the hands of a coonhunter, he is now treeing with the other hounds, but he seems to have lost that get gone attitude, maybe due to all of the owner changes? As a pup he got gone. This one could probably be bought from the guy who has him as he has been going through some tough times.
I haven't had any other females bred to him so I don't know what the results will be with others. I would have to say that I saw a lot of drive in those pups and I think Hobie and his ancestors had a lot to do with it.
The breeding was an accident, Hobie was 8 months old playing with my female when I was feeding the hounds, and she wasn't in heat yet, (little did I know) and he nailed her 3 days before she started spotting. I thought that it wouldn't take, but it did!
How are you Hoss dogs working out for you? As far as the yearbook, I have a lot more ad that I have dog power. I tried to get all of the kids & there hounds involved in the yearbook so they get excited about the whole coonhound scene, other than feeding and watering dogs. pitching poop, and balancing out those chores with just the enjoyment of coonhunting doesn't always cut it with teenagers with all of the other temptations out there.
