I haven't competed in many nite hunts but I guide quite a few and have spectated on quite a few. I don't want to be left out of this post so I'd have to say Wessel's Wild Casey was one of the most impressive dogs I've been in the woods with. Ristau's Jenny is just as good. There have been a couple different nights in the last couple years when hunting with Todd we were monkeying with young dogs and having a frustrating night, we'd go get the old Jenny dog and turn her loose... She'd be treed in 10 minutes. She can still make a nice young dog look bad.

jay, several years ago kirkoffs jake, coon creek jenni(ristau's) dressens little bess and i had tucker at the governors cup . jenny had made grand in nine hunts, bess had just placed top twenty in world and won twbfa hunt dog of year and tucker also was top twenty that year and had wins in six purina hunts that year . all of these dogs were on a roll! jake absolutely whipped us! jenni probably had the best shot but was mishandled . tucker was the last dog in there but could no way catch him that nite. bess was withdrawn? cant remember why? boy was she a loud hard tree dog that night. we could make a long list of all the dogs paul and i had beaten that year with bess or tucker but we couldnt add jakes name to the list that night. *********thanks for the word on cowboy. ben

Merchant's Bounty II - Drew this dog at the 2004 NC State Hunt - he was loud and real quick on both ends. Tough hound to beat.

At the 2005 Bluetick Spring hunt in Ashland OH I drew a Redbone male out of Zbo that really showed us how it was done. That dog would not hunt the same patch of woods as our dogs, and everytime he treed, would be under a coon.

Redbone Hill's Hoss was very accurate and on the night I guided him in 2004 at Southern National Redbone days, but a bawl mouth treedog. Too hard to tell if he was moving for me.

Backswamp Hank II (B&T) is about as tough as I've seen- real accurate.

Misty Blue Ray is a pretty nice hound. Pretty quick strike dog, usually drives a track one way drifting it real well.

B&D's Blue Crook is also a hard dog to get a strike on, and pretty competative.

That's my 2-cents worth...

2 sticks out in my mind

Rough creek Rough Owned and handled by John Evans.I drawed him at 1995 American Redbone days.I had won 1st and High scoreing dog of the all red hunt. The next night I drawed Rough. It got down to just me and him.Rough treed 2 singles and my dog [Rebel] treed 1 by himself. He won 1st in the UKC part of the hunt that night. The next night He won 1st again in the UKC hunt and I won 2nd + high scoreing redbone of the hunt again.I didn't know who he was until I was setting around a club 1 night and looking at an old prohound magazine. And there he was one of the top 10 money winning dogs of all time [at that time].Over $30,000.00 It made me feel better knowing that the only dog at that hunt to beat old Rebel was that caliber of a hound. He was a get in the dark byhimself dog.A little tight on the ground but a real little tree dog that would stay. And absolutely the best obedient trained coondog I have ever seen.
The next 1 is Gr.Nt.Ch.White River Boss an English redtick owned by Tim Woods of Salem Indiana.I didn't draw him in comp.hunt but hunted my current dog [Buster] with him this past summer. We made 2 differant split trees and seen all 4 coons. Then Boss got through the country and treed another byhimself and Buster came in and backed him on it.This dog is absolutely the most stylish English dog I have ever hunted with.Big beautiful bawl mouth on track and is quick to use it.He has a dyeing locate that anyone could tree and goes right into a good hard pull proof chop. And boys he's got a mouth that will shake the ground.Just one stylish hound that I didn't draw in a hunt but stands out in my mind as one of the best I ever went to the woods with.

GR NT CH PKC SCH Lenz Raintree Last deposit Zeb... 1 word WOW I was at an RQE one time sitting around shooting the bull waiting for deadline and we got to talking about Zeb.. A guy who hunts with his owner all the time said He hated to draw him.. we all sat there waiting for him to say hes mean or he slick trees alot or something like that then he finally said 'Everyone hates drawing him because they know they just lost there **** money!"

GR NT CH PKC CH Alberts Last Chance... Never drew him but I turned him loose for awhile! HE was quick and a LOCK DOWN treedog and as close to 95% accurate as any dog Ive seen! Won the black and tan breed in the purina race as an 8 year old and finished runner up in the triple crown race getting beat on a tie breaker as a 10 year old he will be 11 in february and I wouldnt be afraid to hunt him against anything in the country!

THE MAGNETS

FOX VALLEY,
YOU ARE RIGHT IN MY BOOK ABOUT THE 2 MAGNET DOGS. I HAVE HAD BOTH AT MY HOUSE AND HUNTED THEM FOR AND WITH BRIAN DOWNING. BOTH WERE AS TOUGH AS THEY COME. I GOT OLD MAGNET READY FOR THE WORLD HUNT ONE YEAR AND HUNTED HIM AND DUAL GRAND RUSS'TREEIN BLUE LUKE TOGETHER. WHAT AN AWESOME PAIR OF DOGS. MAGNET 2 WAS SUPER TOUGH HE JUST LIKED GETTIN UP IN THEM TREES AND THATS WHAT KILLED HIM. PERRY

Hound

I drew a black&tan in a nite ch. cast back in 1975, in Mullins, S.C. , I was in the military at Fort Bragg, N.C. some people, were nice enough, to keep my dog, for me, he was a Nite ch. Walker male out of H.T. Dereckson"s Kentucky Jude, a quick, loud, hard, tree dog. The black dog, made my good walker dog, look like a puppy. He had treed 2 coons with time out called, i think he was owned by Chalmers Brown, his name was Smokey, he had already won 5 champion of champion, hunts, he had not received his Grand Nite papers yet. The best one night hunt performace, i had ever seen, i got to see Groce's Radio go one night, he got off, by him self, looked good, had a coon.

it would have to be a toss up against the razor ridge blastin butch dog or the vinnings runnin rattler dog in my own opinion the rattler dog was a little quicker but their accuracy was about the same

I dont know how Boss is bred.I would say Hardtime Rocky bred just by looking at him.Give Tim a call I'm sure he will tell you everything about Boss. He's 1 of the finest guys you'll ever meet and a real Sportsman to draw in a hunt.I drawed him several times with his old Gr.Nt. Razor dog before he got killed.Heres his #812-755-1092

I drew Val Nelson's Jed dog tonight, he won the cast and had a coon in every tree. Super nice dog.

I judged Blaze Bauer's Kansas Jewel a long time ago, she was probly the tuffest hound I ever saw. Judged David Minson's Punkin dog, awesome female. Jess Dickerson's Poacher dog was nice. Nocturnal Novicane was nice for her age. I would have to say the best I ever drew though was Eldon Prettyman's Lockdown Libby, she was a young dog but man she could grab those trees. There are more I cant think of right now. I have had the pleasure of drawing some nice dogs.
