i think sometimes though u just know when a dog is gonna make a coonhound, like the first time i showed my pup a coon skin she went balistic, the only problems we've had with her is chasin cows when shesn ot supposed to and chasin deer, other than that its been coon, coon, coon, cat everyonce in a while, coon, coon, ect. but i know she will be a great hound just becuz she barked a lot on that coon, she was interested in coon when she was 5 months old and she treed her first 4 months later

I can't believe 3 years is even an option. In this day and age, you could get 3-6 pups started in that amount of time.

I've messed with a few pups and I have NEVER had one that amounted to anything that didn't show me something well before a year old. On the other hand, of those that I hunted beyond a year old, I think I only had 2 that ever did get to the point they could tree their own coon and they were pretty marginal in getting it done, at that.

I slightly different twist to the topic. I truly believe that particular dogs and particular people just don't gel sometimes. I have seen someone get tired of a dog and sell it. Then the next person makes good with the dog. Is it maturity? Or is it the dog and the new person have a different realtionship? I would bet that many times it is both of those things together.

I have always recommended to anyone I speak too, "if you don't like the dog you aren't doing yourself or the dog any favors by keeping it."

I agree that some people and dogs don't gel. I have a three year old Walker that I raised from three weeks old. Well he is a one person dog. When my boyfriend takes him out, he has a 50/50 chance that my dog will hunt for him. When I take him, we hunt and we put stuff up trees 98% of the time. A few bears or cats will flat put the hurting to us but not many. He is an impressive dog with some wheels on him, just a bit particular to who he will hunt for.

As for age it is hard for me to say. I hate giving up too early. We had one female who would run a track but not tree. She was over a year old and the only thing that kept us going is everyone with littermates was having the same problem. We finally seen when the light went off in her head and holy moly, did the light go off. I have pictures of her 40 feet up into trees after cats. She is a great all around dog now, if we had culled her we really would be missing out.

I treat every pup I start the same. At 6 1/2 months old the pup will be kenneled with a trained dog. I will not take a pup to the woods before it turns 7 months old. I will hunt that pup 3 nights a week for the next 2 months with the trained dog that will get treed on nearly every drop. If that pup is not going with that old dog within these 2 months I won't hunt that pup anymore. If the pup is following the old dog good I expect it to show some interest in treeing before it turns 11 months old. If I haven't seen any interest in treeing I won't hunt that pup anymore. Some pups will slow down on their treeing when they start learning how to track and that is fine, these usually come back around. At 11 months old I will start turning the pup loose by itself on occasion. I expect the pup to show that it isn't afraid of the dark and will go hunting on its own. If a pup will not hunt on its own by 16 months old I won't hunt that pup anymore. I expect each dog to be able to tree its own coon on a consistent basis by 20 months old. The problem I see with most people is they don't give the dog opportunities to learn. I would guess that each pup is turned loose at least 40 times a month starting at that 7 month old period.

If a hound a year-old can't get the job done by itself, I more than likely aint fooling with him anymore.

I might give up on a pup before I ever take it to the woods. At six months old I start taking the pup. If they act like idiots around the pen, I might take them hunting a few times just to see how they act in the woods. I will show the pup two or three coon. I want them to tree on a hang up or do a little hair pulling the first night or two. I will be done with the pup if it doesn't stay with the older hounds and start acting like a tree dog after the first two weeks. I refuse to hunt one of the little idiots that don't get er done at a young age. I know I have culled some pups that go on to make good hounds. However, I have kept a few that have went on to make some good hounds.

whem to cull

i think its the way the pup is raised if it is running loose or in a kennel or chained up an pup that is running loose will learn faster than the ones kenneled up is what i have found jmo. i have had pups that never did much at 16 months old an sold them to a guy an the guy made dogs out of them an i have had pups start at 6 months old so its hard to say when to cull them most times a pup will let you know when he or she wants to go to the woods if you know your dogs, an yes i have culled some i wished i hadnt but sometimes you have to cull not all pups make coondogs its just a fact of life
