So if the judge can make the case that the dog ran offgame, as evidenced by the tracks in the snow, the judge must scratch. Just follow the rules.

Thanks Jim.

agreed.. I have no problem getting scratch if my dog smells badly of skunk or the ones I like the dog goes in bays something and comes back smelling badly of skunk

They don't question a call in the woods and a couple days later they find out their dog was scratched or minused wrongly and tell ever one I GOT CHEATED. YOU ARE NOT A POOR SPORT IF YOU QUESTION A CALL YOU THINK IS WRONG.

I have never been in the skunk situation with my own dog in a hunt(acttually dont think i've been more then a spectator when any of the situations come up) but I have been scratched for off game twice neither time we acttually seen my dog on either. One I picked him off from under a coon with the side of his face full of quills and the other he was clean clear leaving the country on a deer. Judge told me I was scratch that was that. I didnt feel cheated, it was only right the dog did the crime. But then again thats me not you.

Autumn, these message boards are a little difficult sometimes. It's hard to get a point across and easy to mislead or misundersand things. What he is saying is UKC's OFFICIAL position, written in black and white, is a dog does NOT get scratched for smelling like a skunk.

So if you do scratch a dog for smelling like a skunk, regardless of how you feel about it, you are violating UKC rules.

That's what he was getting at I believe.

YES.
I am a MOH and the rules are clear on this. No scratch. You can't follow only the rules you want to. As a master of hounds I get questions that are clearly written on the back of the card, but the cast didn't follow them because they voted. One of the worst ones is, the dogs were struck but not pushing the track (Boo Hooing) for some reason so they voted to call time out and circle the points cause they were wasting time. You can call time out in this situation but it's MINUS. If you are going to hunt UKC you have to follow their rules. I don't agree with some either, but I have to enforce them if not followed.

There was a thread a couple years ago similar to this as previously stated, I believe UKCs take on off game wasnt acttually seeing it but using common sense.

Last fall I witnessed a young dog working a track in a thicket. As he tracked past a brush pile a skunk blasted him in the face. He sneezed for awhile and then went back on track and treed the coon. I had seen the coon run out of a corn patch and where it went so I know thats what he was trailing. When I got to the tree I couldnt stand next to him because he stunk so bad. He did nothing wrong and did exactly what he is supposed to do. How would you scratch if this is a possible scenario?

Yes you are right in that you absolutely do NOT have to see off game to scratch for off game in a UKC hunt. It is the judges call and you are to use common sense just like you say.

But they have also had a specific advisor that stated dogs are not to be scratched for smelling like a skunk so they covered that one specifically.

As always, if you as a judge determine they were molesting the skunk then you would be correct to scratch them, but it would have to be more than smelling like a skunk.

Now I know

Thanks guys who ever answered my question. That's why I asked them so I can learn. Remember we was only pleasure hunting. In a real UKC hunt I would have been SCRATCHED, but not for the SKUNK smell but for the wooping I would put on my dog in the hunt. I think it's called handling of the dog.
