A little history

Back in the 1960’s night coon hunting was outlawed during the gun deer season. Reason was deer hunters were getting caught hunting deer after close of hunting hours, and would say they we’re “coon hunting” with a 30-06. REALY??? But the judges bought it. Only 9 days, no big deal.

Time rolls on, deer population increases and then comes the “extended gun deer season” now the closure is 2 weeks. Took years to get back the nights lost for coon hunting, but we did it, okay back to “only 9 days” no big deal.

Time rolls on, now we have a “muzzle loader gun deer season” guess what, the coon hunters were shut out again, with some back room fighting we got an exception for coon hunting.

Time rolls on, CWD hits the State, months long “Kill them all gun deer season” coon hunting again saved in the back room.

Time rolls on, now we have a Does only hunt in Oct. and Dec. and Youth hunt, you’re right coon hunters forgotten again and these seasons did not have provisions for coon hunting. More back room work to save our time.

Time rolls on, 16 day Gun deer season comes out. There was a web site to collect input from the public, coon hunters responded and asked the question “Hey, what about night coon hunting?” The DNR responded with having the closure only on the 1st 2 days, too bad the proposal died.

Current DNR, they now have a “Deer Czar” who is tasked with setting up a new Deer season frame work. Keep telling yourself that coon hunting will be on the top of his list of things he’s thinking about when this new “Gun deer season” comes out.

We as coon hunters need to be at these meetings, get on the record, or be forgotten again. I’ve retired from the game. Now I ask again, who is going to fight for your sport?????????

Jason, I don't want to start nothing either but I will jump in on this one. That warden that told you that is an ABSOLUTE MORON !!!! He has no idea what he is talking about. When your dealing with wardens that don't surprise me one bit either. Even before this CWD stuff hit, the warden that worked in my area told me I could hunt right through the 9 day gun deer season except for the Friday night before it started. Unfortunately, she has now retired and I have not met the warden that is in my area now. That is a good thing though. I would call her every year to make sure I could and she would always tell me the same thing. "The regulations are so unclear when it comes to coon hunting cause it falls under small game regulations and small game is open during the deer hunting season." Alot of times when I was out coon hunting during that time I would come out of the woods and she would be parked right behind my truck. She would like to sit along side the road and listen to the dogs and then see how many times I had to shoot to get the dang thing out of the tree. LOL.......Then she would tell me I needed to sight my gun in better or bring someone else along that can shoot. It'll be interesting to see what they come up with this year cause I've heard all kinds of stories about what they are going to do with the deer season this year.

right out of the book

Matt, your warden may have said that to you, but others don't and will give tickets.

the bottom line is, this needs to end, and get off the books, there is no good reason why we cannot hunt coon during this time.

Night Hunting: Coyote, fox, raccoon, and unprotected species may be hunted without
hunting hour restrictions except:
1. During the bow deer seasons when hunting hours listed on pages 50–53 apply to bow hunting all species.
2. During the regular gun deer season from November 19–November 27 when normal hunting hours apply to hunting all species.
Note: coyote, fox, and raccoon may be hunted at night during the muzzleloader season, CWD deer gun seasons, youth hunt, and 4-day antlerless-only December gun hunt.
Blaze orange requirements do not apply to those hunters participating in legal night hunting from ½ hour after sunset to ½ hour before sunrise.
