A little history
Back in the 1960’s night coon hunting was outlawed during the gun deer season. Reason was deer hunters were getting caught hunting deer after close of hunting hours, and would say they we’re “coon hunting” with a 30-06. REALY??? But the judges bought it. Only 9 days, no big deal.
Time rolls on, deer population increases and then comes the “extended gun deer season” now the closure is 2 weeks. Took years to get back the nights lost for coon hunting, but we did it, okay back to “only 9 days” no big deal.
Time rolls on, now we have a “muzzle loader gun deer season” guess what, the coon hunters were shut out again, with some back room fighting we got an exception for coon hunting.
Time rolls on, CWD hits the State, months long “Kill them all gun deer season” coon hunting again saved in the back room.
Time rolls on, now we have a Does only hunt in Oct. and Dec. and Youth hunt, you’re right coon hunters forgotten again and these seasons did not have provisions for coon hunting. More back room work to save our time.
Time rolls on, 16 day Gun deer season comes out. There was a web site to collect input from the public, coon hunters responded and asked the question “Hey, what about night coon hunting?” The DNR responded with having the closure only on the 1st 2 days, too bad the proposal died.
Current DNR, they now have a “Deer Czar” who is tasked with setting up a new Deer season frame work. Keep telling yourself that coon hunting will be on the top of his list of things he’s thinking about when this new “Gun deer season” comes out.
We as coon hunters need to be at these meetings, get on the record, or be forgotten again. I’ve retired from the game. Now I ask again, who is going to fight for your sport?????????
