YaAll that are givin this boy a hard time are a bunch of hypocrites. Lots of things around this country that are hurting coon population and i can tell ya a kid with a hatchet aint one of em.

Cody trust me every one of these guys thats preaching at you have probably done far worse so stay in the woods with your dogs have fun and do your best to respect nature. When your dogs tree a double take one and leave one for next time.

guys put crap on here about A LOT worse things than a young man cutting a hole in a tree with a hatchet. i bet its illegal to put a dog in a barrel with a possum and kick it down a dang cliff too. or considered cruel to shock a do into submission. if he has the grit to dig out an old coon out than good for him man. i think its funny. not tree robbing.

Thinking back i believe it was 41 years ago that i bought my first hound and through the years iv seen alot of change in the way folks think about this sport. In the late 70s when a prime hide was worth 40 bucks we smoked em out,cut em out, twisted em out with barbed wire, i can remember one night tieing the dogs and walking 2 miles back to the truck for more shells. A man with a couple good dogs could make more hunting than he could at his day job.

Now we live in a kinder, gentler world where some misguided hunters feel that if they hide the fact that they "harvest" some of those cute little critters that the antis. will leave them alone. So basically what has gotten you so much critiscism on this thread is your honesty.

Bull!!!. That's just pure BS John.
This thread has nothing to do with harvesting wide game. It is only about robbing den trees. Don't go trying to justify this by accusing everyone else on this board, 99% of whom you don't know from Adam. You wanna make excuses for poaching, have at it, just leave the rest of us out of it.

Depends on the state whether or not it's poaching.

It may or may not be in his state.

Ethical hunting practices have to be learned, and ethics change from area to area.

There are deer hunters in many states that consider running deer with dogs to be unethical and poaching.

There are deer hunters in other states that don't understand what the big deal is, it's a leagle way to hunt in their state.

Just a difference of perspective.

I started in the 60's as a kid with my dad.
He taught me way back then that if the coon made it to a den , he won the race.
hide prices never changed it for him.
And that has not changed with me. I still preach that to all who will listen.

wow !! i dont know but i dont think i would have cut one out. but then again if i had a young dog and it just started treeing on its own i might. after it made a run like that id feel bad if i didnt give it to him or her. not saying its right or wrong just think the pup earned it.

Well said Rip. In my state i dont think we have a law about dens Seems pretty silly to me. What if its a den tree but the coon is on the outside? What if hes in a hole with his head sticking out?

Jim seems to be the" poaching police" maybe he can tell us all exactly what is ethical and whats not. How about feeding those comp. dogs coon in the spring to get em ready for the hunts, Is that ethical? And how exactly is taking a coon during season that your dog treed "robbing"

never thought id see the day when grown "coonhunters" were condoneing the cutting of den trees to kill a coon.
the people i came up coonhunting with woulda kicked my azz up between my shoulderblades for suggesting such a thing wheather it was legal or not.
Its not the coon, its the tree. It may be a safehaven for many more litters before its demise.

I also dont believe being 18 yrs old is an excuse for anything.

I never condoned it or commented on it either way. Just making an observation about how different areas have different ethics based on the culture of the area and how there can be strong opinions one way or the other with neither side being able to see the others viewpoint.

Rip is right ... the ones saying they wouldn't do it .... refer to strong influences from their youth that taught them not to .... otherwise , what would they have done ?

A big part of communication isn't just how loud you say it or how smart you think you sound ... it's how well your point is recieved and if you accomplished your goal.

I'd think that some of yall with all this experience being good sportsmen could show more of that sportsmanship toward a youth hunter and still get your point across.

Cody,
I'm like some of the others. I think a lot of these guys need to mind their own business about how they hunt and how you ought to hunt. But...what I will tell you (and it sounds like you've already learned this lesson) don't ever, and i mean ever, climb a tree to get a coon out. Way too dangerous and no coon is ever worth what you've had to go through as I'm sure you already know.

As far as you other guys go, get off his back. My grandpa grew up during depression times when money was scarce and trees were plenty. Back then, if a dog treed a coon in a den tree or any tree (they couldn't waste ammo) that tree was coming down. He'd take off his coat, grab his ax, and start swinging and not stop til the tree was on the ground. He was my hero and you all better not even think about saying a negative word about him or it'll royally pi$$ me off.

I'm not saying I'd do that, but it's more because I'm lazy than because I'm so ethical.

The economy is tough right now and maybe this kid finds himself hurting for money too and needs all the cash he can get. Don't judge him until you've walked a mile in his boots. That's all I'm saying.

i've done the same thing except with squirrels. i don't do it any more simple because it's not that important to me to get game. but it was at one time. i tried to smoke a squirrel out one time and caught that old time on fire. i tried for a long time to carry water from a creek with my water bottle to put it out but i couldn't. so i cleared the area to prevent a forest fire and left. a while later i found that tree, and it was just a hole in the ground. it burned up completely. another time i started a little fire inside a hollow to smoke a squirrel out. after a minute or two that fire got to going like a chimney fire and it started to roar. then that squirrel decided to bale and it flew out the time like it had been fired from a connon. i killed it too. reminded me of a cartoon. now i can hardly bring myself to kill at coon or possum. i've gotten old and soft.

That 2 mile hike and then chopping a hole in a tree and then the long hike out with a coon had to be ruff on ya.
I hope you get back on your feet soon.
