I absolutely hate going to a dog treeing a possum. I have a buddy that is the exact opposite. He can't stand listening to a fast game track, even if they just bump it, but he doesn't mind going to a dog treeing a possum. I told him that the difference to me is that going to the possum tree requires effort on my part and all I have to do to stop the fast game race is push a button. Plus, if they are running junk, they might switch and tree a coon. Not going to do that when they are looking at a possum. lol.

anything that is not a coon is junk. i despise a fast game race. and yes i would rather walk to a possum than run a dog down for hours. to me a possum is the easiest thing to break a dog off of. and bumping a deer and getting on coon happens, but it should not be accepted as a good trait. i have run my share of deer, armadillo, fox and tree some possum and im sure there will be more breaking to do as long as i have a dog. but the goal is to have coon dogs.

I think there a lot of dogs run and tree junk but their owners won't admit it unless they see the evidence..................and then they still might come up with some excuse.

About 45 years ago I hunted with a friend that had a dog that looked more like a possum than a dog. She treed some coons but we cleaned out the possums along the way. I trained a pup with her. That pup was alot more hound. He treed a half mile across a swamp at midnight and when I finally waded there it was a grinner. That is when I decided for absolute positve that possums were trash.

In my life time I've found more than one fresh killed possum on the ground and never had a bark. I guess that didn't bother me much . Skunks to but they're easier to find.

I'm with you all the way...but alot of nite hunts are won by dogs bumping deer till they come across a hot coon. I'd rather lose with a coon dog than win with a deer dog jmo
