I have shot shorts for years, but have recently swithed to Remington and CCI long rifle subsonics. I think they are quieter than high speed shorts and much more accurate. Easier to shoot in feet if you want to see a fight or between the eyes if you don't. I also like the CCI standard velocity long rifle. About the same noise level as the subsonics, also very accurate.

Just bought a box of Remington C Bee's. Long rifle, hollow point, Low Noise. Sound just like the CCI CB's but hollow point. 12.99 a hundred. With the way people are now a days, I am planning on using them this season.

i use the stingers, pretty hot load in my opinion, definetly a head shot with a stinger. don't know if that helps ya at all, just my experience with them.

Heck man I just use a 270 with all the dog's barking people will never hear that 270 crack. And a good thing about using a 270 you don't have to carry the coon to far heck it blows them half way back to the truck, and when you get home you don"t have 2 skin them . Should try it sometime, around here a 22 won't reach the top of the tree. Some really really tall tree's around here. Shot what i thought was a coon one night a when it hit the ground it was a 400 lb bear .

I have tried many hollow point shells through the years including stingers. I always had too much pelt damage. The best shell I have found is the CCI SGB. If I can I usually aim at the base of the ear. Most coons are dead before they hit the ground.

the pelt are the price of minks muskrat or fox called in
couldnt imagine a 22 hurt the pelt as much as 2 dogs
stretching it.

LOL Spanish moss was bad when I was a kid. I thought a 12 ga was what to use. LOL Found most every coon with it too. #8 for locating and #5 for bringing him out. Daddy had a bolt action single shot 22 that was quiet as a be be gun with shorts and might pull them out half the time. Longs always required a knife. Daddy didn't coonhunt but me and my 13 year old buddy woke up alot of folks with that 12 guage 1/2 mile off. Hardly anybody called the game worden. One said he got a call and found our car but he heard the dogs treeing so he left.

Lee,

We put up all our fur. It is a little hard hiding holes left by hollow points or dogs. We don't let the dogs stretch them either.lol

I mentioned this before. I had a subsonic hollow point completely remove the top of the skull cap on a coon. Guess what didn't get sold at the auction? Not one of the buyers wanted it.

Hey, I say if you aren't harvesting the fur shoot what ever, but if you really want to harvest the fur don't use hollow points.

I use CCi long rifle segmented quiets. 40 grain at 710 fps. They drop out the big Illinois coons out with 1 shot. My son cant hear the gun fire over the dog barking.

22 Quiet segmented hollow points

I too blundered across this ammo last coon season and can say with confidence as I have used them all This is the very best round for knock out power and low noise, needed when starting puppies. I liked them so well I went to my local ammo supplier and ordered a brick of them and just got them this week.

These segmented quiet 22's are much stronger than a CB short, a little stronger than the 22 CB long, and even stronger than the CB quiet, with just about the same noise level as the CB Quiet.

I love this round and plan to use it when ever I have a need to harvest a coon. And man they are much better for not scaring a puppy, when introducing it to it's first couple of experiences around a tree.

The aguillas are pretty quiet and will knock ‘em out pretty easy!! CCI quiets just didn’t seem to have the knock down power. Aguillas pretty cheap to..

Segmented

Segmented is the way to go. The round nose have no knock out power. Seen squirrels run into a hole a tree away after a head shot. The hollow points are better but the segmented breaks into 3 peices and its basically shrapnel from there. And it might sound a little loud at the tree, its actually quiet if ur 100 yards away. And they seem to be very accurate out of all the 22s we use.

Shells

Kill shots depend on shot placement more than the shell being shot. I have killed big boar coons with 1 shot using cb longs hitting them between thed eyes. I have also shot coons several times with hollow point long rifle shells hitting them in the body. Shot placement is the key. Dave
