Hoosier Man-
How about a dog catching a 'possum or skunk in a bean or corn patch?
...now that would be an aggravation.....!!!!!!!

I shouldn't be a butt, I do appreciate a hound that gets to the edge and gets treed. If they leave a hot track in the middle of a bean field race to do it. I'm not sure I would like that. If there pecking around in a bean field I would certainly like to see them get to the edge and tree a coon. I have hunted many hounds that start off good in a bean field race and soon it's just a coon following instead of a coon catching.

That's what I'd say too if my dogs had to run around the edge of a field , waiting for the other dogs to push the coon out , in order to get a first tree ! LOL

Waiting? You kidding me? My female was finished to Grand Nite as a 2 year old with some dang good scores. She doesnt wait on anything. I'm all about treeing coon and doing it in a timely fashion on a consistent basis. Let me ask you how many dogs have you finished to Nite ch? How about Grand Nite?

I'm not asking you Greg I'm asking Bob. I train for the hunts. Dogs running in beans eat up precious hunt time.

"I'm all about treeing coon and doing it in a timely fashion on a consistent basis."

So am I. But I don't have to train my dogs to only take certain tracks to do it.

"Let me ask you how many dogs have you finished to Nite ch? How about Grand Nite?"

What's that got to do with anything?

Because I train my dogs based on competing with them. I train in ways that will help me achieve the most points.

Questions!!

How many Gr Nt's, Nt's, open or cur dogs have you hunted with, trained, culled or have a picture of that has caught a big coon in waist high beans. I'm not talking about hear say, I mean actually heard them catch one and go drag them off the dead carcass.

I do agree with not scoring points in a hunt when a hard running coon a crop field decides he would rather die running as to take a tree.

What's more agravating? Catching one in the crops or listening to him play follow the leader all night? Up here there are coon you will never see if your dog won't run em down, cause they will not climb.

I know those bean field races are a pain, but I heard from an old-timer who visited Arkansas and hunted in rice paddies, or fields, or whatever they`re called. He said there were 4 Grandnights pleasure hunting! When the night was over all dogs had come in except for his, and he had to catch him. When he finally caught him, he said is eyes were swollen nearly shut and he was cut up pretty bad. Just passing on what I was told.

I have never seen a hound that could run to catch in a drilled bean field! And I've hunted with some pretty good hounds in a lot of drilled beans.

Thats why I would just as soon see my dog ignore bean fields. Nothing good can come from one running in them.

I don't know if I get what you are saying. Dogs that hunt near roads get run over. Dogs that hunt around gators get Gator ate. Dogs that catch coons get their ears pierced. Dogs that hunt in briars get scratched. Dogs that hunt in rocks get sore feet.

Dogs that hunt in thick grass get their eyebrows thinned??

Drilled beans are the ultimate for this area. I haven't ran in rice fields but they say it's tough. I have one hound that has caught coon in drilled beans. Not every night or every week but has caught a few. Seen him catch two or three in a weeks hunting in milo or planted beans.
