I would not get a dalmation, of the ones I ever was around one was a sweetie and the other a snapper. I think there was so much breeding for profit with the 101 Dalmation movies and they bred spots to spots for $$.

Look at viszlas, they are a bird dog but they love to work close and are built to go and go. They are known for being a pal around dog in terms of personality plus you could walk up birds with them if you ever get the urge to hunt birds.

Here is my 2 cents; we raised and showed Dals in AKC for years until an injury made us downsize to a lap dog breed, They are like any dog breed you need to research for certain lines in the breed which are not Hyper and high strung, this is where your snappers and biters come from in my opinion, Males are prone to forming crystals leading to stones so no beef, pork or liver in the diet helps. The dal is a great choice for riding with, clubs around the country have road trials with horse and dal upto 20 miles. If intersted pm me as we still have contacts to Rescue and breeders for what you are looking to do. One of the most loyal dogs if the line is right, Please don't go to a backyard breeder. Also deafness is also a problem. We took all of our pups to a prof at the university of michgan to have their hearing tested. JMHO

Love our dal

Hey buddy we have a yr and a half old dalmation. He is the smartest dog I've owned. I can leave him in the truck and he stays until I tell hi
To get out. He is my 2 yr old daughters best friend. He runs with my swims with me and catches frisbee like no Other. Not to mention kill possums out of the back yard. I highly recommend then awesome dog. I advise you fo find a reputable breeder we drove far and paid good money for ours but it's worth it

excellent. yep. a dobie is not what you want either. good grief. they are so overbred also. my aunt had a rescue dobe. went through ALL THE SESSIONS. turned.
\check out a vizsla. oh yeah, you dont want a hunting dog. rhodesian ridgeback is a very SOLID BREED. they are used for hunting lions, you should be ok.
have you ever thought about a belgium malamois???? they are great, you get the protection, and no health issues yet, and you get limited hair.

pm me about what you are really looking for.
i might be able to hook you up with a breeder or a rescue.

a vizsla is a very solid dog. tempermant and health wise.
i had a german shorthair, a little wired for sound, but she was a real good bird hunter, companion , etc. i kick myself in the butt for giving her away. no, i dont, she is with a widow that wanted some protection without the attitude. and they are still living happily ever after.
but like i said, wired for sound.

As you already know the breeder is the key. I've had 3 dals. the first one was the best dog ever she was kicked by a horse and broke her back. The 2nd one came from a lesser breeder and she was very aggresive. The 3rd one came from breeder number 1 and was great. Like jason554 said she would do anything with us a great dog.

i would not reccomend a dobe no matter what. if you are looking for the dog you are, companion , running buddy, gonna kick your butt if you mess with my mom. go to the pound. there are a few i would think.
breeders cant always be trusted, they want to unload the old pups. there is a reason, maybe economy, maybe bad breeding.
i dont know it all, but i know enough about alot of things.

anything that has been overbred, do not get. my advice.
obviously, you have one of the best dogs ever bred. the coonhound, we will consider the breeding later, lol, but i am sold for an all around dog, that is it.
nothing like a hound.

I've looked at our pound and will keep an eye out there.. That is where my heeler came from actually.. Most everything at our shelter is lap dog size or half pitbull.. Nothing against pitbulls.. I just don't like the way they look.. Don't like the look of boxers either LOL.. It's being picky, but when I get a dog I fully expect to have it until it dies..

My hounds are almost perfect for what I want.. Except the hunting part of them.. I don't think it is fair of me to not want them to hunt when I'm out on a horse or hiking.. And when I'm out in the wilderness I really don't want to be after one of them.. So that means I'm shocking them off of good game.. Nope, can't do it.. They go camping and swimming with me, but they are always looking to hunt.. Which I think they should.. Other then that they are great in the house, very loyal and mine are protective over me..

GSP's are wired WAY to much for me.. I haven't been around Vizlsa's, but if they are like minded to a GSP, I don't want it.. I have been around GSP's.. They are not for me.. It's kinda why I don't like a Lab.. I know there are many many people who love them, but they drive me fricking nuts We used to raise them when I was younger...

I have no idea at this point LOL.. I've emailed a couple people with different breeds so we will see what comes of it..

This is why I'm starting to look now for a dog that I plan on getting 8 months or so from now.. I don't want a backyard breeder or a puppy mill.. I want something that is going to be healthly, had it's, whatever needs checked out, checked out and comes with a health guarantee... from someone who is not breeding to just put pups on the ground to make money..

ever think about a rottweiler, when kept in shape they are athletic, and they are very protective. With the right breeder, which you are keeping in mind, you can get one that is good natured, my aunt and uncle have a male and female that are by the the best tempered dogs I have saw.

Those would be my choices, along with australian shepard.

The only dalmatian I was around was mean.

Same here, we've had 3 of them. The first was a 1/4 German Shepherd and THE BEST DOG EVER. Smart, loyal, loving, would go anywhere with ya and almost knew what you were thinking and you didn't have to say a word. The other two were full blooded but awesome dogs as well. One was a male and tons of fun. Other was a female, and other than being a little on the lazy side, a great family dog.

Not too bad on the shedding, ours never had any health problems, just seemed to be well rounded good family pets. Our first one came from a family friend who owned a junk yard, he owned the parents who were very friendly, smart but also protective.

Might be smaller then you want but a minature pincher is a very loyal dog. Despite there size can out do most big dogs, very active and protective but not ill. Just a thought.

I also got to thinking that every sheltie/mini collie that I've ever been around has been smart, energetic and protective. I work with a lady that has a 2 y/o grand daughter who has down syndrome. They live out in the country and the girl and the sheltie always are together, if the girl wanders off Boo is there to bring her back. If she gets out close to the road, Boo mouths her arm and gets her back. This is just one instance but I've been around others that were very nice dogs. Just another option to look into.

Long haired shedding dogs now? Have you concidered a cur dog that won't hunt? Not every one of them do. I have tried and tried but this one won't hunt. It can trail go though. I hauled it off several times. It can trot along beside the truck at thirty miles an hour for 10 miles I know of and beat me home. Second time I hauled it off a couple miles and let it chase the truck away from home for 8 miles till I thought it was getting tired. So I turned around and headed back and it kept up. Had to gallop though when I got to 50 miles an hour on a washboard road. I just couldn't do anymore and hold the truck in the road. Then I got to a paved road for a mile and hit 70 and stomped on the antilock brakes and took another dirt road to the right and gunned it again. I didn't see the dog in the rearview mirrow any more. I went on home thinking I had finally out done him. A kid called up and said he had found a ringnecked dog with no legs wearing my collar on the side of the road. I new he must have got hit by that log truck so I went back to get my collar. When I got back the kid was pulling that ring down from around his neck and his legs popped out. Ready to go again. That dog is very good at going but he has a fault about stopping that fast. You pay shipping.

All dogs are going to shed (unless I get a labradoodle) and if I have to put up with the long hair, I will.. if that is the type of dog that fits what I want.. Yes I would prefer a shorter haired dog.. but hey, who am I kidding.. it going to be inside so I'm going to have dog hair all over everything...

I think I would go Heeler again before Border Collie.. Again just one of my preferances.. I had a real nice little 25lb Border Collie one time... I wish I still had the little guy, but I gave him to a guy down the road to bring his pigs in and out of the barn with.. the dog was very happy when he got that job..

Thanks for the offer on the non hunting cur... but I want to raise it from a pup.. And I want to wait until after cat season when my attention won't be so divided...

He is not spayed nor nutted and I think I got another worthless female coming on. You can breed them and get you a like minded puppy. I think they are too lazy to shed but they can trail ride, He might be too worthless to shed sperm as well. I don't know.

Question back to you. If a laboradoodle does not shed , what happens if he was to get conflickted with those other mange mites? Or even scaulded by a preserved steam locomotive? Would he grow hair or just strut around naked and prideful?

Hey Melanie,
Do you know Shea Skinner? I know he's handled some Dals in the past and I'm sure could put you in touch with good breeders in the area.
The first ranch I lived on in OR we had a short coated Border Collie (female) that was an awesome dog. The second ranch I was on, the foreman had an English Shepherd (male). Again, another awesome dog to be around. Went everywhere with him, whether on foot, horseback or in the truck. I had a Sheltie mix when I was up there and he was a great dog too. I never really did much training with him because he never needed it.
I had two GSPs before the coonhounds and they were great dogs but like you already know, HYPER!!
There's a *working* GSD breeder who lived near us in CA. Nice dogs, import lines, but not cheap and her waiting list can be long.
Anytime I went to any kind of horse event in CA it seemed everyone had Border Collies, Australian Shepherds or Jack/Parson Russells. Tiny and I almost got into Border Terriers years ago. Those are fun little dogs!
I like the look and size of the German Pinschers, but don't know much of anything about them.

I have a heeler.. We brush twice a week with the furminator His undercoat sheds all the time..

Chawn.. I don't think I know him.. Or if I do, I don't know that I do If he is stil showing then I'm sure I've seen him.. I was still thinking of talking to a few Dal handlers at the last show.. I hope you and Tiny are doing good over on the far side!

I've found a few sites with some working GSD and would like to have one... but.. I'm not sure if I can get enough saved up by this time next year.. that is more like a couple year project on savings.. I'm trying to figure out if dropping a couple thousand on a companion dog qualifies me as nuts...

I've got a few ideas on what I'm going to do.. It is going to be a while still.. but I have ideas..

It is possible and will always be an option.. I grew up with a collie/shepard/chesapeake retriever mix that was the BEST dog ever.. He was a good watch dog, but friendly for the most part.. Very protective over us kids.. would patiently herd us back to the house if we hurt ourselves and never left our side until we quit crying.. He used to wait for us to get off the school bus and would walk us up the driveway.. Poor guy even let me turn him into a reindeer one Christmas and we made him pull us around on a sled.. He was the type of dog every kid should grow up with.

My heeler actually came from the Humane Society after it turned into a No Kill Shelter.. He had been there 6 months already and was almost 2 years old.. Everyone there was making a fuss over all the pups... He got pretty excited when I went over to say Hi to him.. I wasn't even looking to get a dog, but here we are 11 years later.. He really is a great dog.. Up until he starter having his nerve issues in his hind end, he went everywhere with me.. I feel disloyal looking for another one..

So yeah.... A crossbred mutt or one from the Shelter is always an option.. I haven't ruled that out yet.. Just depends on what I see..
