ok. More times than not its the pump.. The Ethanol absolutely destroys the fuel system on everthing you put it in! It often corrodes the brass up in those anti-siphon valves keeping the ball from seating against the o ring is why I suggested checking that

I had a motor doing the same thing, I changed all of the little gas lines on the carb, a gas line has a lining in it and if it is bad it can collapse and you will never know because the outside stays rigid, but it was just like you stated, idle good and all but fall on its face when it was about to plain off, it was because the vaccume was increasing and finally would pinch off. Looks like the fuel pump was the problem. Took it out yesterday and it ran good, opened up and all the sluggishness was gone.
