Young Dog

You have a few problems going on here. I’ll try to help and I hope you don’t take it the wrong way because I’m not trying to be a wise guy or start an argument of any kind. So here we go. It sounds to me like you haven’t been hunting dogs very long and that’s ok we all started at some point and as we go we should learn. I’ve been hunting all my life and I’m still learning at 55 years old. It also sounds to me that you really like this dog and that’s ok too but that won’t make the dog any better at treeing coon. As far as the coon crossing in front of the dog and her acting like it wasn’t there I wouldn’t worry about that. I never did figure it out and I’ve heard every reason you can think of but I’ve seen good dogs do the same thing in that situation and it wasn’t because the had a problem with their nose so don’t worry about your dog not being able to smell. The best thing you can do for your dog is hunt her alone as much as possible for the next two months. It may be boring because you said she don’t do much but give her the chance to do something alone with only you and the dog in the woods. She may not tree a coon but just maybe she will hit something that will trigger her desire to hunt and trail some sort of game. Alone, alone, alone, I can’t say it enough because it’s very important for a dog to learn things alone with no help from you or another dog. If she starts acting like she smells something and is looking for a track or smelling up a tree just leave her alone and don’t say anything; let her do it her way in her own time. If she runs one track or trees one coon it will help her more to get started than 50 tracks or trees with another dog. Always keep in mind no matter how much we like a young dog the fact is that every dog don’t make a good hound and some are just worthless, that’s the reason top dogs go for big money. I hope this helps you with your dog in some way and I hope you haven’t been offended by anything I said. Good Luck

Needing and wanting help is a good thing. You can save yourself years of mistakes by learning from those that have already made them. When you get down to it however there is really only so much you as a person starting a dog can do. You expose the dog to what you want it to hunt, try to give it an idea of what you want it to do, but after that the dog has to do its part.

Its nice to like a dog and sometimes you can't help yourself from doing it, but the dog has to have the skills and instinct necessary that its brain is prewired to do what you want, you just bring it out by exposure and practice. In order for me to hunt a young dog, the #1 thing that sucker has to do is get treed alone right or wrong. The dog has to have the genes in its blood to want to stop, pull up on a tree and stick. If I have hunted the dog 30 or 40 hours and it has never treed, I just stop caring what happens to it. There are so many dogs out there that want to tree just because that is what they do.....that messing with one that doesn't want to is more a fault of stubborness of the trainer than the fault of the dog. Nothing harder in coonhunting that weeding through dogs other than ruining your hobby huning ones that make you frustrated.

It's nice that you feel that way because as long as you have an open mind you have the ability to learn and you will do well in coonhunting and life too for that matter. Only those who think they know everything have closed the door to learning. I wish you luck with your dog

Don't let them discourage you. If you are willing to put the time into her and not give up, it will come to her at some point. Just keep trying to make her bark up!

That's good. I'm glad. Where exactly do you live in NE Ohio? I live in NW Ohio. We should try to get together for a hunt sometime!

Your dog might not be very treeminded..Thats a dog that will just smell up trees while hunting..If you have a dog that will not smell up the side of a tree they will never make a good treedog...Most pups are not keepers. If your Lucky about 50% of all pups will tree a coon for you..Only about 15-25 % of them will be keepers...Some will be a lot better than that but thats about average for most hunters...Some hunters seam to always have a good pup coming on.But they usually have 2-3 they are working to get the one they will end up keeping...

just my opinion just keep taking her with you but ignore her and give extra reward to the dogs on the tree, tie her back till she barks then pet her up a little. One of my favorite dogs old Nell acted the same way when she was a pup but by the time she was 3 she was the one treeing all the coons for us.My advice is to keep hunting her as long as you enjoy it the pride you will feel when she comes around will be worth the wait

I GO UP TO URBANA TWICE A YEAR TO MY UNCLE'S HOUSE JUST TO COON HUNT. THEY HAVE A TON OF COONS. I LIKE TO TAKE ABOUT 2 WEEKS OFF WORK AND TAKE MY YOUNG DOGS UP THERE ESPECIALLY WHEN THE MULBERRIES ARE ON AND THE CORN IS JUST STARTING TO TASSLE. 2 WEEKS UP THERE WITH A YOUNG DOG IS BETTER THAT 6 MONTHS DOWN HERE AS FAR AS GETTING THEM TO TREE. IF SHE DON'T TURN OUT RIGHT NOW, WAIT TIL THE KITTENS COME DOWN, THERE WILL BE MORE COONS THEN AND SHE'LL HAVE A BETTER CHANCE AT GETTING STARTED. WHILE WAITING, TRAP HER A FEW AND TURN EM OUT FOR HER. IF SHE TREES EM PRETTY EASY, THEN WAIT LONGER THE NEXT TIME TO TURN HER LOOSE, MAKING THE TRACK A LITTLE COLDER. MAYBE THIS WILL WORK. AS FOR HUNTING THE DOG ALONE, I COULD NOT AGREE MORE. NO DISTRACTIONS AND SHE CAN BE CURIOUS, WHICH IS WHAT SHE NEEDS TO BE BEFORE SHE CAN BE A COON DOG.

Yes mame I understand you 100%,like some of the good folks in here have stated to you,and I did, just sounds kinda of strange, i know this question may rough a few feathers out here, but i have to ask you, no disrespect what so ever is intended by this question ,so please except my sincere appoligy,
Are you sure she has been checked over real good by a vet?
Im telling you this due to the fact I have seen many cases in my clinic where folks have been tookin by buying a hound that wasnt even game intended nor bred correctly for Hunting.Honestly it just sounds like something real simple to correct,at 1 years old she is still puppy natured ,and I believe in the golden rule and that is to many peas in the pot spoiles the kettle.
my addvise at this stage is work her alone and see if she really has it in here,I know you love her as I would also, some just dont make the cut to be 100% coon hounds ,she is very pretty dog maybe re concider her for just the bench, nothing wrong with that, for at 1 year old I would be attached to her as well, but honestly, look her over real good and try from scratch again like she was a young pup,and see if you can correct the problem, if not then you know what the problem is.
I do believe this problem you are having can and real be corrected ,it will take some time and frustration may be a factor on your end, like a feller said maybe reward her when she does tree on her own, maybe she just wants to be spoiled ,lol.Isure hope you find your answer and when you do please share this information with us if you would please...good luck.....dave

its been awhile since ive posted anything on her so i thought i would put a update.....we went hunting last night and she would go so far then come back to us and just stay with us till we went in to the older dog....when the older dog starts locating she listens to her and tries to find her but usually just follows us in to the tree...once we get to the tree she acts like she knows what shes doing she jumps at the tree and and a branch fell out of the tree and she swore it was the coon and drug me to it...shes acting alot better at the tree its the whole tracking part that she dont get...

Sometimes all they need is time and some so age on em. Once she starts doing a little better with the other dogs i would start taking her by her self and make her work for it.
Good luck

Here are some choices:
1: Make her a show dog
2: work her every night non stop and knock some coons out to her alive pull the other ones away let it piss he off sometimes it works.
3: keep her as a house pet

My gf says the dogs i have now will never go anywhere well i dont want them to im not a dog trainer and idc if i tree coons at all i just like seein them run in the woods
