I've had a Marshall tracking unit and two collars for nine or ten years now and haven't had a problem until one of the cables on
the antenna broke last fall. It's made every step with me and is
turned on a lot of the time I'm out there checking where the
dogs are heading with are busy roads around here.

I have a Marshall Stealth and 6 Marshall collars. I've had a couple of operator error incidents where I didn't get the collar shut off with the magnet correctly but otherwise have had no problems. I've also gotten fairly decent tuning it to get me on the best line of where my dog is at.

I run both the Garmin and Marshall collars on all my dogs. The reason is that one time the dog must have bumped the garmin collar on a tree and the collar unit just quit transmitting. Garmin did send a replacement right away though.

If you like the Marshall, I haven't seen anything with it that would make me think its not going to help me find my dog if needed. I don't carry the receiver with me because of the bulk but I think of the Marshall as a nice insurance policy in case the garmin quits on me again.

I also use the flasher lights instead of the lighted collars. I felt that this made the most sense because I wanted as much battery life in the collar in the event the dog is lost. The light draining on the same battery that would be transmitting a signal the next day (or more) didn't make sense to me.

Actually Wildlife does have collars for small dogs as well as large dogs. I have both sizes and 6 different models of there collars and have had great service out of all of them. I also have some Quick-Track collars and they are good but don't compare to the Wildlife for signal in the area in which I hunt.

I understand that you are not buying a Garmin. Rumor has it that Marshall is going to come out with a GPS/tracking collar that works both ways. If you can hold out you may want to wait until this unit is available. My only issue with Marshall is the price. I use to buy the collars but I would buy a cheaper tracking unit. With those Marshall collars I've found that most any tracking unit works well as long as the frequencies are compatible.

Buying a beep beep in this day of GPS technology is like buying a car with no air conditioner and heater.


Secondly, as soon as you shell out $1,000 for that Marshall you wont be able to get 60% of it back if you sold it the very next day.

I would save some money and buy someones discarded Wildlife or Quik Track for $200 and use the rest to take my kids and wife out for a weekend vacation.

I have yet to buy a Garmin but will probably do so one of these days. That being said, I use a Marshall tracker and collars, bought new in 2009, and as far as tracking equipment goes, they are superb. I have the lights on the collars, but don't use them too much as they will draw down your batteries quite a bit faster when not being used. Even when I do get my Garmin, I will continue to use trackers; maybe the kind where you can put a tracker on the gps collar; its better to have back up. In this day and age of expensive dogs and nutty people out there, you need all the protection on your dog that you can muster.

Most Garmin users started out useing both radio tracking collars and the Garmin collar. Almost all of them quit useing the radio collars very quickly.

I've found that after my experience with the Garmin I'm more likely to use my marshall if I'm only putting on one collar. The Marshall is much more "impact resistant" and in many places where I hunt rocks and brush piles are good places for coons to duck in to when being ran. I know the helpless feeling when the Garmin just quits. I'm sure the marshall's can too but I'm hoping to never find out. I took out a female that I have tonight and put the Marshall with a tracker flasher on. She's the kind of dog that has no problems going into a hole or brush pile. I didn't have to worry that she might bang up the plastic cased garmin collar and the marshall worked fine. She also went deep into a brush pile and I spent 20 minutes dismantling it just to get to her.

Other than the cost, I've yet to see a down side to the Marshall. I have not used the other brands so I don't have a lot of experience to share, but if I had to start over, I'd still shell out the bucks for the Marshall. But that's just me. Good luck with whatever you decide to get.

I have had a Marshall for 10yrs had to have the collars sent in 1 time They were fixed fast & good $70.00 for both & still working good ! Good & reliable tracker / easy to get set up / Good range & Good direction / it has close / med / far / set on close & if you get single you will hear your hound / can get out of hearing med range & if weak signal on med drive if you can / far & weak signal you will be driving or over the mountain terrain ! Been a Good tracker no problems with receiver ! have used it Alot over the years / had a ATS before & it is just as good & easier to use ! Use the lithium batteries & you are good to go ! I still use mine

This is a wayyyy old thread, but I find it alarming that there aren't more big game hunters chiming in here......Ok, lets say your bear hunting and you're in these East TN Mountains.........You lose a dog, say for example the Garmin collar lost communication and you weren't able to get up with it in time for it to pick up signal again, or worse, the gps collar has died, and your out there the next day hunting for your dog, what good is that Cadillac with the AC if it doesn't run??? We run both gps and telemetry on our dogs here at home, most times you don't need the telemtry box, but on occasion you do.........I guess nobody on here understands that when your hunting big game in rugged terrain, and your running game miles instead of hundreds of yards things are alot different QUICK! Ya'll should come for a hunt and see how it all works.....
