My current set up I have the house next to the garage.

Here you can see the dog can only get his head around the back.

If the dog has enough chain to get in but not around... the house will never move. I always position house to the outside of the space. Never inside where the chain can wrap around the house.

This set up, which is one summer house, will show the house against the fence. The dog can't get all the way around the house.

Here is another summer set up, before I used the cable and only had a chain. The chain can't be wrapped around the house.

This will show how far in the house the dog can go.

When you have a litter of pups how do you know who the sire is?

We have both kennels and chains. I prefer to keep my own on chains. For the most part I only keep pups or females in heat in a kennel.

Right at the moment all our chains are connected to the dog houses themselves, houses are too heavy to move. Best set up i've found yet for chains.

It also helps keep biting flies and some insurance against skeeters. I have cattle, sheep, and goats and was having a terrible time with biting flies. I put the cattle tags on my dogs and no more flies. Ridding them of flea and tick problems was just a lucky side effect. Only problem is with the hog and bear dogs that run through a lot of rough terrain, they tear the tags off. I am experimenting with zip tying them to the under side of the collar.

Have you tried putting the tags on like this on the collars:

I over lap the tag and punch the male button through. I take a Dremel (or you can use a grinder) and file down the point on the male button till it's round and smooth. No glue to come unglued or tie straps to break.

Especially if you got off the ground runs like puppy rearing pens. Off the ground is good idea for little pups because of worms etc. But face it a good worming program you cant't beat. I'm more likely to remember worming than I am bleaching and all that stuff , Heck I don't get around to putting Ajax in my own comode but every couple of months. Personally I would have one dog per twenty by twenty pen But I got plenty of room . My pens and chains now thake up about a quarter acre but I got sixty more acres to go and I don't want nor can afford to feed that many.

Getting back to Oakie dog, My off the ground pens are my most secure ( no chance of climbing) so I recently put a new female in one. I could feed her but she would not let me touch her for two weeks, her choice not mine , so I put her on a chain ( come to find out she was already chain broke) but in two days she would voluntarily crawl up to me because she knew she was going to get petted whether she wanted it or not. I know the man I got her from and I am possitive she was not miss treated , she is just a crawl up to you and skittish I recon type dog. I have taken her hunting twice now and have not had a problem getting her loading back in the box.

long answer for I lke chains and puppy pens and big pens. I am positive I would not scoop poop on concrete and they stink to high heaven down south anyway.

That's why they make trail cams ain't it? You know it ain't your dog. Maybe DNA?

I just had a brainfart, maybe you keep the males on chains and the females in bigole pens and then if/when you notice a female coming in you put her in an "in heat" pen that she cant git out of nor a stray can get into? Kind of like a Chastity Belt notion from the 1500s. Don't tell the younguns about my idea , they will sure call DHHs or at minimum, HSUS. LOL.

10' chain.......so, a 10' radius and a 20' diameter circle if the dog can run in circles.....

Area = pi x radius squared where pi = 3.1416

radius = diameter/2 = 10 ft

area = 3.1416 x 10 x 10 = 314.16 sq ft.

......A 4x8 kennel is 36 sq ft.

lol.......big diff in sq footage here ........But, I'll stick with my 3 acre enclosure !!!

Chains and Kennels here. I like to keep the pups and young dogs on chains they like it alot better more room to play. I keep the older dogs in the Kennels. I also have one above ground pen where I raise pups and put females in heat. I only have 2 old dogs and 2 young dogs at the moment. I also have one heck of a watchdog 1/2 Catahoula 1/2 Austrailian Shepard. The best watchdog I have ever owned EVER.

They had a thread about useing those on dogs back in the summer. Some said it made dogs sterile. Is there any truth to that?
