we also fed that retriever over the summer and the coon dogs was getting hot spots, and i was told it was because of the food ,so we went to diamond naturals chicken and rice and they all went away. beagless did good on it, but you can feed them anything.

Hate to break it to everyone, but most the feed we feed our dogs is Junk according to someone.

You have the people who say no corn is best, but I have researched where most vets agree Corn is 99% digestible and if dogs get allergies its most likely caused by beef or wheat!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If the feed youre feeding works for you, by all means feed it.

I got in trouble last year for saying hi-standard and ultra and joy was the same feed, yes Wade called me. Problem is noone denied it!! Like I stated last year, look up ultra 26-18, Joy 26-18, hi-standard 26-18 then compare ingredients!! They all read the same, and are all manufactured by PRO-PET in st.Marys, OHIo, but I'm suppoesed to be stupid and not put that together and expect, owners of these companies to call and BULLY me.

Ummmm........

If you have been through a dozen feeds trying to find atleast one that makes your dogs look good or perform well, I hate to break it to you but chances are it isn't the feed that ain't doing the job. There is more to feeding than simply tossing a coffee can full of kibble in a feed pan. When guys can't seem to find one that works, most likely it is a result of them not being as knowledgeable about their dogs as they think they are. Those who shift from one junk feed to the next, I get a kick out of. Those who have their act together as houndsmen and the owners of performance dogs aren't on here asking about feed. If you are not achieving the synergistic effect of the performance aspects and biochemistry, you will never find a feed that works, only one that is destined to be changed again in a month. One junk formula to the next.

Dog Food

I have fed most of them listed on here, In my thoughts, the Diamond 24/20, Ol'Roy, Pride, Joy, Hi-Standard, Sexton Brothers, Ultra Advantage, Red Flannel, Retriever, etc, etc,......Are ALL a lower grade dog food than regular old Purina Dog Chow, I would rather feed Dog Chow than ANY of these.

If you want a better dog food, you have to pay the price, but in the long run you spend less and your hounds will look, and perform alot better, and you will have 3/4 less clean up in your pen.

I feed Purina One and Diamond Extreme Athelete, they work for my dogs,...........just feed what you can afford, and something your dogs like........................Tim

I fed diamond hi energy and cleaned out the pen 3 times a day. I have only one dog at a time and it looked like there were 3 dogs in there. I went to diamond naturals after one back of hi energy was dryed out (almost white) and the next smelt rank. Naturals cut down cleaning the pen to one time. Her coat seemed to look a little better and performance did not change. She started getting a little heavy so I reduced the amount I feed. After cutting back a little, the 40 lb bag will last one dog about 7 1/2 weeks. Normal cost is $31 and is on sale alot for $29. They were out last time I needed feed so I got the diamond extreme for $34 for 40 lbs. The bag says to feed less than the naturals. Just started feeding it so I can't say much yet.

I too have alot of mess to clean up. Hows the extreme working? Price doesnt really matter to me as long as the dogs like it and it keeps them fat and slick. My biggest problem is finding a feed that a store doesnt quit carryn after a couple months. I used to feed black gold but i can no longer find it around here. I tried Iams Eukanuba but that feed tore my hounds stomachs up!

I've only been feeding the extreme for 3 days now but i fed the diamond naturals chicken and rice for a year and It is far better than the diamond hi energy. I'll let you know about the extreme in few weeks. I'm not sure i will keep feeding it when I run out of this bag. 32% protein might be too much. I'm going to do some research to better understand about it.

Yeah I hear alotta folks say that alot of protien will burn a dog up. Diamond dog food is just easy for me to get around here. I may try the sportdog feed and maybe even the Hi tech rations feed that tractor supply carries. they do carry some purina feed but the switch it out so much its hard to get the same kind from week to week.

I had heard they were only changing the rice they use in it who knows. And they are putting it in a different bag and the price is going up about $7.00 a bag according to the guy I was getting it from. So sick of finding something that works and is easy to get and then the idiots decide to change everything.

The recipe only changed on the Hunter's Edge 24/18 they made a premium and a regular. The premium reads better, the regular looks like junk. Thanks to partnered with ducks unlimited the price jumped dramatically. Karl

My dogs are actually looking decent on the Diamond 24/20, but the kennel clean up is ridiculous.
Especially on my male. I clean kennels every single day. Everyday when I show up it looks like it has been 3-4 days since I've been there. My male looks like his kennel ain't been cleaned in a week. He seems to have a sensitive gut or something anyway, he was the reason I switched to this feed thinking he'd do well on it. It ain't worked out that way and I'll be switching soon.
Condition wise, they look fine. But I'm tired of shoveling dog crap and they're burning through the food faster than they should be.

I fed Enhance till they changed it ,,the place I got my feed from Burkman Mills bought the original recipe from Enhance ,and is now making it by the brand name FORMAX. It looks just like the old enhance feed ,and I'm getting good results from the feed. It cost 19.99 plus tax for 50 lb here in central ky.

¡Diamond Naturals Small Breed Puppy
¡Diamond Naturals Extreme Athlete
Diamond Naturals Small Breed Adult Lamb and Rice Formula was selected to represent the others in the line for this review.

Diamond Naturals Small Breed Adult Lamb and Rice
Dry Dog Food

Estimated Dry Matter Nutrient Content

Ingredients: Lamb, lamb meal, cracked pearled barley, whole grain brown rice, egg product, chicken fat (preserved with mixed tocopherols), millet, beet pulp, potatoes, flaxseed, natural flavor, fish meal, potassium chloride, salt, choline chloride, dried chicory root, Yucca schidigera extract, vitamin E supplement, iron proteinate, zinc proteinate, copper proteinate, ferrous sulfate, zinc sulfate, copper sulfate, potassium iodide, thiamine mononitrate, manganese proteinate, manganous oxide, ascorbic acid, vitamin A supplement, L-Carnitine, biotin, niacin, calcium pantothenate, manganese sulfate, sodium selenite, pyridoxine hydrochloride (vitamin B6), vitamin B12 supplement, riboflavin, vitamin D supplement, folic acid

Fiber (estimated dry matter content) = 3.3%

Red items when present indicate controversial ingredients

The first ingredient in this dry dog food lists lamb. Although it is a quality item, raw lamb contains about 80% water. After cooking, most of that moisture is lostc reducing the meat content to just a fraction of its original weight.

After processing, this item would probably occupy a lower position on the list.

Which brings us to lamb mealc the second and more likely the dominant meat ingredient in this dog food.

Lamb meal is considered a meat concentrate and contains nearly 300% more protein than fresh lamb.

The third ingredient lists barley. Barley is a starchy carbohydrate supplying fiber and other healthy nutrients. Unlike grains with a higher glycemic index (like rice), barley can help support stable blood sugar levels in dogs.

The fourth item is brown rice. Brown rice is a quality ingredientc a complex carbohydrate that (once cooked) is fairly easy to digest.

The fifth item lists dried egg productc a dehydrated form of shell-free eggs. Quality can vary significantly. Lower grade egg product can even come from commercial hatcheriesc from eggs that have failed to hatch.

In any case, eggs are easy to digest and have an exceptionally high biological value.

The sixth ingredient lists chicken fat. Chicken fat is obtained from rendering chickenc a process similar to making soup in which the fat itself is skimmed from the surface of the liquid.

Chicken fat is high in linoleic acidc an omega-6 fatty acid essential for life. Although it doesnft sound very appetizing, chicken fat is actually a quality ingredient.

The seventh ingredient is milletc gluten-free grains harvested from certain seed grasses. Millet is hypoallergenic and naturally rich in B-vitamins and fiberc as well as other essential minerals.

Once cooked, millet can be easily digested by a dog.

The eighth ingredient lists beet pulp. Beet pulp is a controversial ingredientc a high fiber by-product of sugar beet processing.

Some denounce beet pulp as an inexpensive filler while others cite its outstanding intestinal health and blood sugar benefits.

We only call your attention here to the controversy and believe the inclusion of beet pulp in reasonable amounts in most dog foods is entirely acceptable.

The ninth ingredient is potato. Assuming theyfre whole, potatoes are a good source of digestible carbohydrates and other healthy nutrients.

The tenth ingredient is flaxseedc one of the best plant sources of healthy omega-3 fatty acids. Flax seeds are rich in soluble fiber.

However, we find it unusual to see flaxseed here in its whole seed form. Whole flax seeds are almost impossible to digest (at least for us humans) unless they are first ground to a usable powder before they are consumed.

After the natural flavor, we find fish mealc another protein-rich meat concentrate.

Unfortunately, this particular item is anonymous. The term gfishh does little to properly describe this ingredient. What species? What parts?

Fish meal is commonly made from the by-products of commercial fish operations.

We are pleased to note that, unlike many fish meals, this particular item1 appears to be ethoxyquin-free.

From here, the list goes on to include a number of other items.

But to be realistic, ingredients located this far down the list (other than nutritional supplements) are not likely to have much of an effect on the overall rating of this product.

With two notable exceptionsc

First, we find no evidence of probioticsc friendly bacteria applied to the surface of the kibble after processing.

Finally, this food does contain chelated mineralsc minerals that have been chemically attached to protein. This makes them easier to absorb. Chelated minerals are usually found in better dog foods.

Diamond Naturals Dog Food
The Bottom Line

Judging by its ingredients alone, Diamond Naturals appears to be an above-average dry dog food.

But ingredient quality by itself cannot tell the whole story. We still need to estimate the productfs meat content before determining a final rating.

The dashboard displays a dry matter protein reading of 28%, a fat level of 17% and an estimated carbohydrate content of 48%.

If we exclude the lower-rated Lite product, the brand features an average protein content of 29% and a mean fat level of 18%.

Together, these figures suggest a carbohydrate proportion of 45% for the overall product line.

Average protein. Above-average fat. And below carbohydratesc when compared to a typical dry dog food.

With no evidence of any plant-based protein boosters, this looks like the profile of a dry dog food containing a respectable amount of meat.

Bottom line?

Diamond Naturals is a grain-based dry dog food using a notable amount of chicken, beef or lamb meals as its main sources of animal proteinc thus earning the brand four stars.

Highly recommended.

Those looking for a nice wet product from the same company may wish to check out our review of Diamond canned dog food.

A Final Word

This review is designed to help you make a more informed decision when buying dog food. However, our rating system is not intended to suggest feeding a particular product will result in a specific health benefit for your pet.

Remember, no dog food can possibly be appropriate for every life stage, lifestyle or health condition. So, choose wisely. And when in doubt consult a veterinarian for help.

Have an opinion about this dog foodc or maybe the review itself? Please knowc we welcome your comments.
